BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will play host of the 2006 Mid-American Golf Championships this weekend, starting on April 28. The three day event will be held at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Indian Springs, Ohio.
The Falcons, behind new head coach Stephanie Young, have had a solid spring season. In just their second tournament of the spring Young helped coach the Falcons to a first-place finish at the St. George Invitational, in St. George, Utah. BGSU also won the Youngstown Invitational back in mid September. It's the first time in Falcon history that the women's golf team had won two tournaments in the same season.
Leading the way for the Brown and Orange is a trio of sophomores. Jessica McCann, who is coming off a MAC Player of the Week award, leads the group with an 81.01 stroke average. Just last week at the Illini Spring Classic she matched her season-best with a 77, only to post a career-best 75 one day later. She finished eight in the tournament.
Fellow classmate Carley Hrusovsky owns an 80.41 stroke average. In her last 10 rounds she has broke 80 seven times. In that time she is averaging 79.00 stokes per 18 holes. She shot a career-best 73 in the opening tournament of the season (Youngstown Invitational) and has broke 80 13 times this season.
The third sophomore of this terrific trio is Amanda Bader. While averaging 82.67 strokes per round her best finish came in the Rocket Classic back in September. By shooting three straight rounds under 80 (77-78-77) she was able to finish the large field in a tie for 15th. She also finished third at the St. George Invitational, a tournament the Falcons won by posting a 157 (78-79).
The lone junior on this season's squad is Kari Liggett. The co-captain is averaging 83.15 strokes per round and has broke 80 five times this season. She was the top Falcon finisher at last season's MAC Championships, where she finished in a tie for 26th after shooting a 164 (78-86). This season alone she has finished in the top six of tournaments twice. She finished second overall at the Youngstown Invitational (78-76-154) and sixth at the St. George Invitational (83-78-161), both Falcon tournament victories.
Fellow co-captain Amanda Schroeder is the lone senior on this year's team. Last season she finished in a tie for 39th at the MAC Championships, posting an 83-90. This season her best performance came at the St. George Invitational where she finished tied for 14th after posting a 169 (87-82). Also, just last weekend she shot a season-best 78 in the Rocket Spring Classic, the second-best round by a Falcon.
Lindsey Jonkhoff completes the Falcon squad. She opened the season with a sixth-place finish at the Youngstown Invitational (79-76) and followed that up with a 79-84 at the Cardinal Classic one week later. On the year she is averaging 86.21 strokes per round.
