BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- - The Falcons finished their first home stand at 1-1-0 after dropping today's decision to the visiting Panthers of Eastern Illinois (1-1-0), 2-1. Three rookies, Jacob Lawrence, Tyler Deal and Ahmad Smith (2g, 0a), were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts this weekend.
Midway through the first half, BGSU's Smith was fouled hard inside the keepers box and was awarded a penalty kick. He converted the one-on-one situation against EIU's Mark Hansen and sunk the first goal of the match deep into the right corner of the net. The Mississippi native finished the game 1-1 for shots on goal.
Bowling Green held the lead for the remainder of the first half at 1-0.
In the opening minutes of the second half, EIU's Brad Peters beat two Falcon defenders, but his soft shot landed snug in the chest of sophomore Paul Shoemaker. Minutes later, Peters once again looked to generate an spark in the offensive set and found his kick in the netting of the goal after Shoemaker challenged the Panther at the top of the box.
A Ryan Perea steal behind the midfield line seemed as if it would lead to a BGSU goal after traveling from the foot of Alec Perea to the heads of both George Davis IV and Ahmad Smith, but the EIU defense stopped the play before it reached the Panther's keeper.
Bowling Green's defense regained control of the tempo of the match, but lost it once Shoemaker's attempt to clear the ball went a rye as the ball fell out of bounds. The mistake gave the Panthers the corner kick that would eventually set-up the game winning goal. Mick Galeski's goal at the 75:28 mark gave the visitors the upper hand in the momentum and a 2-1 lead.
Due to a four way tie of one win and one loss on the weekend, Western Illinois University was awarded the tournament championship due to goal differentiations.
WIU's Kosuke Kimura was named the tournament MVP and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Fellow Leatherneck's Stephen Patterson, Nick Bohenkamp, Preston Bernardi and JJ Stefanic joined Kimura on the All-Tournament team as well as Mick Galeski and Brad Peters of EIU. Jordan Vert was the lone Titan of Detroit to make the awards squad.
The Birds of Prey will return to action next weekend as they begin a four game road trip that will place them on opposite sides of the country for the next two weekends. September 1-3 BGSU will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the Coastal Carolina tournament while the Falcons will find themselves on the west coast for the St. Mary's (CA) tournament on September 8-10.
