BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three unanswered goals gave the Falcons (1-6-1) their second loss at Mickey Cochrane Stadium as visiting Wright State (5-3-0) took the 4-1 victory. Red-shirt freshman keeper Mark Scholz stepped in for the BGSU defense at the half and recorded a match high eight saves in his collegiate debut.
A long pass from Justin Kim in the 12th minute of play set up Cameron Hepple's high powerful shot that seemed as if it was going to give the Orange and Brown the immediate edge, but the angle of the shot just barely skimmed the top of the goal.
"We are at the point where we are a young team and we need to get a bounce our way once in awhile," said head coach Fred Thompson.
Wright State snuck a goal past the Bowling Green defense in the 19th minute, but the offensive attack, led by Justin Kim answered the goal just two minutes later. The BGSU goal was scored as George Davis' corner kick was loose in traffic in front of WSU's 6'7" keeper, Tebias Mason. Kim found the ball and converted the shot to a goal amid the shuffle. This was Kim's second goal of the season and his fourth as a Falcon.
"Mason's size did not have much effect on our game plan. In college soccer you are forced to place against players of all sizes," said Thompson. "Our troubles came when we shot balls straight at him instead of curving them and we put too many close to him."
Wright State regained control of the scoreboard at the 31:23 and led 3-1 going into the intermission after a late Raider goal was scored as the clock ticked away to under a minute.
Scholz was sent in to relieve Shoemaker at the half and appeared as if he would not be challenged as the BGSU offense kept the possession away from the Raider's scoring territory.
Although the Raiders later found a way to create scoring opportunities, Scholz made several diving saves to keep the Falcon defense alive.
Wright State's last goal was scored on a header past the far post.
"Because we are young I had hoped we would come around sooner, rather than later. But with that being said, we will come around," said Thompson of his team.
Bowling Green will have no time to rest after today's match as they will host Michigan State Wednesday and Evansville on Sunday. The matches will kick off at 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
