BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis program has announced the schedule for the 2006-07 season. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will play a total of 12 home events, beginning with next weekend's (Sept. 16-17) BGSU Invitational.
The Falcons' fall slate consists of a pair of invites as well as possible ITA Regional Championships competition. The BGSU Invitational will feature a total of eight teams and two days of tennis action at Keefe Courts. Mid-American Conference foes Akron and Toledo will join Cleveland State, Dayton, Illinois at Chicago, Xavier, Youngstown State and the host Falcons in the field.
BGSU then heads to Evanston, Ill., for Northwestern's Wildcat Invitational on Oct. 6-8. The ITA Regional begins Oct. 19 in East Lansing, Mich., and concludes the Falcons' fall slate.
The schedule resumes in late January with trips to the Windy City (DePaul, Jan. 20; UIC, Jan. 21) and the state capitol (Ohio State, Jan. 27), before the Brown and Orange return 'home' for nearly a month.
The Falcons will play six consecutive matches at the team's indoor home, Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee, Ohio. BGSU will meet YSU (Jan. 28), Wright State (Feb. 3), Duquesne (Feb. 9), Xavier (Feb. 10), Detroit (Feb. 11) and Ferris State (Feb. 17) during that span.
After a trip to Michigan State (Feb. 24) and a return to Shadow Valley for a match with Butler (Feb. 25), the MAC season begins with a trio of road matches. The Falcons will head to the MAC's 'West Coast' to face Northern Illinois (March 24), then embark for the league's 'East Coast' to meet Buffalo (March 30). The next day (March 31), the Brown and Orange will face Akron in the Rubber City, before returning home for four of the final five conference matches.
Miami (April 6) and Ball State (April 7) come to town on April's first weekend, with both matches scheduled to be held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus. The Falcons then conclude the road portion of the schedule with an April 14 trip to Western Michigan.
Eastern Michigan comes to Keefe on April 20, and the Falcons conclude regular-season play with a home match vs. arch-rival Toledo the following day (April 21). Then, BGSU heads to the Glass City for the MAC Championships, hosted by UT. The four-day event begins Thursday, April 26, with the MAC's champion crowned on Sunday, April 29.
As always, the schedule is subject to change. Click HERE for the latest schedule updates during the season.
Last year's edition of the Falcons posted a 14-10 overall record and a 3-5 MAC slate. Dean and assistant coach Jay Wiseman have two seniors (Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe), two juniors (Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle), three sophomores (Libby Harrison, Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff) and two freshmen on the 2006-07 roster. The frosh are Katia Babina (Glenview, Ill.) and Samantha Kintzel (Libertyville, Ill.).
