BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) -
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"This was a big win for us tonight, against a very good veteran Kent State team. I thought we played an excellent first half; we did what we needed to do. We kept them off the boards, we kept them off the foul line -- where they had been going over 26 times a game -- and got out and scored ourselves. We had been in the 60s the last three times we played Kent State, so it was nice to see us get out and score early, and allow our defense to take hold in that first half."
"I told the kids, right before the start of the game, that we could go back (and look at all the BGSU-Kent State games) in the six years I've been here. If you look at all our losses, you could say that we were the team on our heels. In our recent win streak against them, I think we've been able to get them on their heels. In this matchup, the team that is the aggressor has been able to come away with the wins. You have to play in control, but you have to go right at them, because if you back down to their pressure defense, they will get you on your heels in a hurry, and they will shut you down."
"Liz Honegger ... had a monster game on the boards. We have shot the ball well this year, but we haven't had great rebound numbers. It's the one thing that still stands out on the stat sheet, even with all our success. But, tonight we did what we needed to do to win the defensive rebounding war."
"Three points of emphasis in this game, not unlike a lot of our games: no free points off (opponent) offensive rebounds, no free points off of our turnovers, and keep them off the foul line. If we could make baskets the whole game and take away those 'easy' points, then I thought we could defend them. But, in the first few minutes of the second half, you saw what they could do. They got to the foul line, they got two steals that led directly to points, and they got an offensive putback. We had to take that timeout in the second half to remind our kids what they had done well in the first half."
"The bench was big tonight. We were in some foul trouble, and they certainly came through. Our bench players had eight assists tonight, and close to a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. That's big. They really came through tonight. It's a little scary when you look up and see Ali Mann and Kate Achter in foul trouble, so it is great to see the bench play as well as they did."
SOPHOMORE POINT GUARD Jasmine McCall
"Coach tells us to push the ball; he wants up-tempo play, and wants us to stay aggressive, but also to stay composed. We just try to keep the tempo at the speed we want, and not the speed the other team wants."
(On playing 17 minutes due to Kate Achter being in foul trouble)
"Coach Miller tells the bench players to always be ready. We need to cheer for our teammates and stay in the game, and we all know we need to be ready to go in at any time, so that's just what I try to do every game."
SENIOR CENTER Liz Honegger
(Do you feel that it will be tough, every game, for teams to beat you?)
"Every game's going to be tough for us as well. We know we have a target on our back; we've had it for a while now. Coming into the game, we have to be just as prepared and ready to go as the other team will be. We know that every night's going to be a battle, and if we don't bring it, it will be awfully tough for us to win."
(On BG's rebounding)
"Basically, Coach Miller put it like this: Kent State is the best rebounding team in the league, and we are the worst. He challenged us to go out there and get on the boards, and one of our keys was keeping them off the boards as well."
(How enjoyable is it to play for this team?)
"It's awesome. I was driving home today, listening to music in the car and thinking about the game tonight. I was thinking, 'I only have so many games left, and I'm going to enjoy this as much as I can.' I love my teammates, and we are having a lot of fun together this year. We are always there for each other, and we have each others' backs, no matter what."
KENT STATE COACH BOB LINDSAY
"Bowling Green played very well tonight. They outplayed us in every aspect of the game. There is not one area where I thought we were better than BG. It's a credit to their staff and their team. They play very hard, and certainly outplayed us tonight."
"If you look at their season statistics, they are one of the very few teams I've seen that have a positive assist-to-turnover ratio. Their players are smart, they handle the ball well, they spread you out and they execute well. They're not going to turn the ball over against anybody, really; I don't see them turning it over, no matter what defense is played against them."
"Bowling Green has good size at every position. They take up a lot of space on the floor, and they get out in the passing lanes. They spread your offense out a little bit wider than what you want to run, and it's tough to run offense against them. They play good position defense, they're physical, they play hard -- they do everything that you want a defensive team to do."
"The great thing about their team is that they have five players that you have to guard. All five of them -- and it may even be six -- are capable of being the leading scorer in any particular game, and that's what makes them different from a lot of other teams. Other teams don't have that capability, but they do."
"I've known Curt for a long time, and when you have a team like this, you should really cherish the fact that you do have a team like this. These kinds of teams don't come along very much in your career, And, you really have to enjoy those kids and how they play the game, because you may not have another team that plays like that for a while."
(On the atmosphere at Anderson Arena)
"Going back to the days when Fran Voll was coaching them, I've always enjoyed playing here. It's always been a great building to play in, and the fans have been excellent every year that I've been here. Obviously, with the level of success that they've had lately, they've had more interest, and that's terrific that they can get that many people in here to support their team. That's what women's basketball should be like."
