BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons hosted Cincinnati, Ball State and IPFW in a four-squad meet and walked away with a second place finish behind Cincinnati who finished with 181.5 points. BGSU finished with 165.5 points and beat Ball State (125 points) and IPFW (56 points).
"I thought that during the last two weeks the team performed consistently," said head coach Cami Wells. "This week we got beat by Cincinnati where as last week I thought that we gave up some points that we could have fought a little harder. This wasn't the case this week we were just a little short handed in some events and that cost us the team competition but overall I was happy with the way the team competed."
Four individuals who accounted for five wins tonight led the team to their second place finish. Takarra Dunning was the Falcon who walked away with two first place finishes in the shot (43-06.50) and in the weight throw (48-03.50).
"Takarra did a nice job this week. She's very consistent for us and that's important," said Wells. "They've had a tough two weeks of training so they're tired at this point so for her to fight through and be consistent and to throw a PR in the weight throw speaks a lot for her mental capacity. She did a nice job at stepping up and competing for us."
Others who were victorious were Jamie Roflow in the mile with a time of 5:01.39, Jessica White in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62 seconds and Carly Bates in the 800-meters with a collegiate personal-best of 2:19. 02.
"The other three, Jamie, Jess and Carly all ran really good time especially for this early in the season. Jess really wasn't pushed too hard in the 60-meter dash so to run solid dash time puts her near the top of the conference. Jamie was just barely off of her PR in the indoor mile. She ran a strong race and at this point in time depending on the rest of the results this weekend is ranked second in the conference in the mile. Carly ran very well as did Kim Settle in the 800 to be very consistent and start of the season with a solid 800-meter time.
Other top performances for the Orange and Brown were Nicole Standback in the 60-meter dash fighting for a third place finish with a time of 7.84 seconds. Ashley Spates finished third in the 400-meters with a time of 1:01.30. Yemoja Marotta raced to a second place finish in the 500-meters with a time of 1:18.61, just shy of the school record.
Bates edged out fellow teammate Kim Settle in the 800-meters. Settle finished second with a time of 2:19.37, a new personal record. Kara Butler ran to a third place finish in the 3,000-meters with a time of 10:23.33. Bridget Dalic was second in the 5,000-meters with a time of 18:57.21. Teaming up with Dunning in the throws was teammate Lauren Bryant who finished second in the weight throw (47-00.25) and third in the shot (41-08.75). Erica Wilson rounds out the athletes in the field events with a second place finish in the high jump (5-02.25) and third in the triple jump (34-09.50).
"We just have a few areas where we still need people to step up and do a little better," said Wells. "We have some events that we need to focus on a bit more but overall everyone at this point of the season everyone is doing well. There are areas we need to work on and practice harder but we will continue to do so in the coming weeks."
The Falcons won't return home until Feb. 10, but do head to Findlay next weekend to compete in the Findlay Track and Field Classic.
