A Night of Career Bests
Last Saturday (Jan 20), the Falcons took to the mats to compete against Western Michigan. In a close meet, the Orange and Brown edged out the Broncos winning, 189.300-189.075. The Falcons were led by junior Jholeen Ponce, who recorded two career bests on vault (9.750) and beam (9.825). Those scores were good enough for third and first, respectively. Also leading the charge was senior Jacque Bernhardt who hit a solid routine on vault (9.800) tying her for first. She also set a new personal best.
Freshmen Have Early Impact
Head coach Dan Connelly said before the season that he would need the freshman to step up as they would rely on them early in the season. So far he has not been disappointed. Morgan Balzer is one of the freshmen that has had an early impact. Saturday she tied for seventh on vault (9.625) and fourth on floor with a 9.600. Amber Brewer also left an impression as she won the floor recording a 9.750 and finishing fourth on beam (9.525). Megan Chronister had her share of the spotlight when she tied for sixth on bars (9.300) and finished fifth on beam (9.500).
Chaining up the Huskies
Northern Illinois comes into the meet 2-0 on the season. They defeated Wisconsin-Stout and M.I.T in a tri-meet. NIU's team score was 190.950 followed by Wisconsin-Stout and M.I.T. 176.900 and 174.075 respectively. The Huskies were led by sophomore Leah Johnson who won the all-around (38.150), and freshman Natalie Blum who won vault (9.750) and floor (9.775).
Last season the Falcons fell in a close one at home to the Huskies 190.850-190.025. Overall BGSU leads the series 8-3.
Upcoming Schedule
