OPENING STATEMENT
"Our inability to score goals clearly put us behind the eight ball here tonight. Both 5-on-5 and on the power play for the first two periods, we had a lot of quality chances that we didn't score on. Their goalie made saves, but I thought on top of the 37 shots on goal, we had a number of really good chances that went wide. We didn't bear down enough to score goals and we got in trouble, where they scored two short-handed goals and two power play goals. Special teams were a big difference and our inability to score goals."
Did you feel the short-handed goal was a turning point tonight?
"It was a big goal. You never want to see that happen. Our ineffectiveness on the power play was dangerously close and it certainly caught up to us tonight. I thought even 3-0 going into the second period that we put 17 shots on goal and a number of shots wide in the second that we were in position to get back in the game. We just couldn't get that spark offensively and that goal offensively to give us that momentum. A lot of chances and a lot of shots on goal, and we never capitalized."
What did you think about the power play tonight?
"It wasn't very good. We didn't handle it well on the first five-minute power play. You get a power play early in the game, two minutes or five minutes it's going to dictate how the game goes. Their penalty kill handled that situation and our power play didn't come through. We still had 15 power play shots and enough to score goals but we never broke through offensively to give us any confidence."
Can you talk about the play of Western Michigan goalie, Riley Gill?
"I thought he did a good job. He's a big kid and showed a lot of poise in there. He made himself big, and had a lot of shots on him."
What can you take away from this weekend?
"We were disappointed tonight. We wanted to feed off last night and give ourselves the chance to earn a sweep. Our inability to score goals didn't give us a chance to do that."
