BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has jumped up six spots in the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll, released Monday afternoon (Jan. 8). The Falcons are now ranked 18th in the nation, the highest ranking for a Mid-American Conference team in league history.
The Falcons were ranked 19th -- the previous high for BG and a MAC team -- in the AP poll on March 16, 1993, and BGSU is currently ranked 19th in the USA Today/ESPN Top-25 Coaches poll, with the new edition of the USA Today/ESPN poll due out on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 9).
The Falcons are ranked in the AP poll for the fourth consecutive week. BGSU broke into the poll with a ranking of 25th, and stayed at that spot for a total of two weeks before moving up a notch to 24th in last week's (Jan. 1) poll.
BGSU had 129 points in last week's AP poll, but received a total of 300 in this week's listing.
Monday's appearance in the AP poll marks the 16th week in MAC history that a league institution has been listed in that top-25, and BG has been that team in 12 of the 16 weeks (six during head coach Curt Miller's tenure).
Similarly, last Tuesday's appearance in the USA Today ESPN poll marks the 18th week in MAC history that a league institution has been listed in the USA Today poll. BG has been that team in 15 of the 18 weeks, including 11 weeks under Miller.
The Falcons are 12-2 on the season, and BGSU is 2-0 in MAC play after wins over Akron and Buffalo to open the conference campaign. BG will host Kent State Wednesday evening (Jan. 10) at Anderson Arena, in a rematch of the last two MAC Tournament championship games. Tipoff for Wednesday's game is 7:00 p.m.
