Captain John Mazzei
How does it feel to start the season out with a 12-1 win?
"I think we were well prepared. We have been waiting a long time for this and it was a great team effort tonight. We came out with some speed and we really worked on putting things from practice into our game tonight."
How do you feel about the way the offense worked together tonight?
"It's great. We had a lot of contribution from freshman and the rest of the team. It was great to see a lot of different guys playing tonight and contributing. It was a great result for us."
What about the play of the freshman tonight and Dan Sexton's hat-trick goal?
"It's spectacular. He's a great player with lots of speed, our freshman class has lots of speed. It's special for him to get out there and have a great night going to the net and working hard. Hopefully he can take it to conference play and continue it there."
What can you build on from your win?
"I think we had some plays along the boards and we need to get the puck out better and be a little stronger. For the most part we did a lot of things right, we just have to move on and we can't be satisfied. Looking at next week we have some big non-conference games coming up."
You also had a three goal night, what helped you prepare for tonight's game?
"I had good line-mates. On one goal I went to the net and they put the puck on my stick and I didn't even have to look. We made some great plays and I think our team had an all-around great game. I had good chances and got lucky by putting them in the back of the net."
What else did you think about your team's play tonight?
"I thought it was a great team effort. We had a lot of speed and the guys are really pumped up to get the season going and started off on the right foot."
Freshman Dan Sexton
What does it feel like to have a hat-trick as a freshman on the first night?
"It feels pretty good. I was pretty nervous before the game, but we treated it as a league game. It was a lot of fun and I was real nervous at the start of the game, but I just wanted to get out there and get myself into the game early and prove myself. I was lucky enough to catch a break."
What's it feel like to have a big win tonight?
"It feels great. We felt we had a good team this year and we had to test ourselves against another team. It was great to get out there and have a lot of guys involved on offense. It was a good start to the season, when you're playing against your own team a lot you think you have a good team and good depth with your lines. It was good to go out there and take it to them from the start."
How can you improve on tonight's game?
"I think we just have to keep doing what we're doing. I think we could get the pucks out of our zone, because the teams we are playing next week will be even better offensively and they will turn that into offense if we don't get the puck out. Offensively I think we don't have to change much, but defensively we can always get better and fine-tune ourselves this week. By Wednesday we should be better than we were today."
What does your play tonight do for you confidence going into next week?
"I try to pride myself on playing with confidence. It's easy to get down on yourself and it was a good confidence booster playing against these guys and hopefully myself and my teammates can just keep it going through the rest of the season."
Talk about your breakaway goal that sealed the hat-trick for you.
"The guy fumbled the puck and tried to make a blind pass across the blue line and I just got aggressive, and he put it right on my tape. I knew I had a breakaway from a long distance and I had a lot of time. I just had a move in my head and tried to do it, and if I didn't score, whatever."
Do you think this is a sign of the future for the freshman class?
"I hope. We thought we had a good freshman class this year. Obviously, we had a young team last year, but all of our guys are a year older and a year better. As freshman we're just trying to hang in there and do our part, and we're going to play our roles as best as we can. As far as our team goes, I think everyone is on top of their game and as we knock the rust off we are going to be a real hard team to play against."
