CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The `experts' have made their selections, and the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team has been picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference's East Division in 2007-08. The poll, the result of voting by members of the MAC News Media Association, was announced at the MAC Media Day event Thursday morning (Oct. 18) at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
Falcon head coach Louis Orr and junior Darryl Clements represented their team at the event, meeting with various members of the media during the morning session.
"I've never been the head coach of a team that was picked to finish first," said Orr. "In most cases, we weren't picked to finish in the top half of the league. At the end of the day, it's not where you start, it's where you finish.
"We just have to believe in ourselves. Everyone is going to have opinions, but it's up to us to determine our success. We just have to work at it, work hard, and God willing, we will determine our own success."
The Falcons received 47 points in the poll, five fewer than Buffalo. Kent State was the voters' choice to win the East Division, narrowly beating out Miami for that honor. Ohio and Akron were tabbed to place third and fourth, respectively, followed by UB and BGSU.
Western Michigan was picked to win the West Division, nearly 30 points ahead of Toledo.
KSU received seven votes to win the MAC Tournament, while WMU received six and Ohio and Miami five apiece. The Falcons received one vote to win the league tourney, which will be held at Quicken Loans Arena from March 12-15, 2008.
Orr returns nine letterwinners from last year's team. Fans can get their first glimpse of the Falcons in action on Nov. 1, in a home exhibition vs. Wayne State. The regular season begins with three games in as many days at Cincinnati's Peggy Cronin Classic (Nov. 9-11), with the home opener set for the following weekend (Nov. 17) against Morehead State.
