BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head women's basketball coach Curt Miller has announced seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor, along with junior Lindsey Goldsberry, will captain the latest Falcon squad.
The trio brings experience to the team combining for 4210:00 minutes on the playing court as well as 1386 points.
"I am happy to announce Kate, Whitney, and Lindsey as our tri-captains for the 2007-08 season," said Miller. The seventh-year Falcon leader recognizes each of his three athletes to possess strong leadership skills, but also notes each will bring a different strength to the program.
Achter, who was recently named a preseason All-MAC honoree for the second straight season, has started in 88 consecutive games dating back to the 2004-05 season as the point guard for the Falcons. For her career, she averages 11.2 ppg and 4.0 rpg. The Oregon, Ohio native also leads the team in steals with 125.
"Kate is the overall leader within the program and was the unanimous choice to fulfill the role of captain not only by her teammates, but was the clear selection by the coaching staff as well," said Miller. "Kate is our engine and will be called upon to lead us the entire year on the court."
Taylor will return for her final season with the Falcons after suffering a knee injury in December. The Wooster, Ohio native average 3.0 ppg and 1.1 rpg over the span of nine games last season. She set career highs in every statistical category, except blocks, while also matching her career best in rebounds last season.
"Whitney is our emotional leader within the program," said Miller. "She is constantly trying to fire up the team and demands each and every member of the team plays with energy and emotion."
Goldsberry, the youngest of the group, more than doubled her minutes last season averaging 22.9 as a sophomore after seeing an average of 9.8 as a freshman. In two years with the Falcons, she has picked-up 90 steals and has complemented a teammates' score on 85 occasions. Last season, the Dayton, Ohio native was named the teams' Most Improved Player.
"Lindsey is our leader by example. She plays with all out effort every single day," mentioned Miller of the guard. "Her effort is infectious and she is an inspiration to her teammates."
The Falcons began practice earlier this week and will face Dayton in a closed scrimmage on October 30. BG will also match-up with Findlay (Nov. 5) before kicking-off the new season on Nov. 9 against Valparaiso. Both the Findlay exhibition and the regular season opener will take place in Anderson Arena and are scheduled to see a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
