The BGSU Volleyball team currently in fourth place in the MAC East Division will host their final two home matches of the 2007 regular season this weekend, both crucial bouts in the race for the MAC East Division Championship and MAC Tournament seeding. The Falcons match up against Kent State on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 4:00 p.m. and finish up their home 2007 schedule and honor BGSU's seniors when they host #16 Ohio on Sunday (Nov. 4) at 4:00 p.m.
THIS WEEKEND'S MATCH-UPS
Falcons vs. Golden Flashes
The Falcons will match up against the Golden Flashes for the second time this season. The Golden Flashes are currently 19-6 overall and tied for second in the MAC East at 10-2. The Golden Flashes swept Buffalo and Akron this past weekend at home.
The Falcons lead the all-time series against Golden Flashes, 39-17. BG is on a three match winning streak against Kent State in Anderson Arena, and holds a record of 22-5 over the Golden Flashes at home. The last meeting (9/28/07) between the two teams the Golden Flashes had the Falcons their first MAC loss of the season.
Falcons vs. Bobcats
The Orange and Brown will host their final match of the regular season against #16 Ohio. The Bobcats are currently 19-4 overall and 11-1 a top the MAC East Division. The Bobcats are on a nine match winning streak after sweeping Akron and Buffalo this past weekend.
The Falcons lead #16 Ohio in the all-times series 40-20 overall and are 15-7 in Anderson Arena. The last meeting between the two teams this season was on Sept. 29 when the Falcons fell to the Bobcats 0-3 in BG's second MAC loss of the season. The last time these two teams squared up in Anderson Arena was on Oct. 26, 2006 when the Falcons set a new attendance record of 1,305. The Falcons had a heartbreaking loss to the Bobcats after coming back from a 2-0 deficit and taking the match to five games. The Bobcats broke the Falcons 17 match winning streaking, the longest in BGSU history.
BRONCOS BREAK FALCONS' WINNING STREAK
The Falcons went into Saturday's (Oct. 27) match coming off of a 3-1 win over the MAC East Division leader Miami (Oct. 24) and on a eight match winning streak. The Falcons didn't have enough to beat both of the MAC leaders as they fell to MAC West Division leader Western Michigan (24-30, 28-30, 30-27, 19-30). The Falcons weren't able to get their offense going like they have in the last eight matches. The Broncos held the Falcons to a .105 hitting percentage for the match the Falcons' lowest in the month of October.
FALCONS KNOCK OFF LEADER OF THE MAC EAST DIVISON MIAMI
The Falcons ended the RedHawks nine match winning streak and brought them down to a three way tie for second in the MAC East Division in BGSU's second win over Miami this season. The Falcons remain perfect at home now 11-0 and extended their winning streak to eight matches with a 3-1 win over Miami (30-27, 30-20, 20-30, 30-27). The Falcons owned the net once again in Anderson Arena hitting a .209 and totaling 13 blocks for the night compared to the RedHawks .172 hitting percentage and five blocks.
FALCONS LOOK TO PACK THE HOUSE FOR SENIOR DAY
The Falcons are attempting to break the BG volleyball attendance record of 1,305 set last year against Ohio (10/26/06) on Sunday (Nov. 4) when they take on the Bobcats once again in Anderson Arena. Last year's match featured and electric atmosphere inside Anderson Arena, as the Falcons were riding a 17 match winning streak, the longest in BGSU history. Ohio claimed the first two games of the match, but BG battled back to take games three and four to force a fifth and deciding game before falling short, as their winning streak was broken and the Bobcats emerged victorious.
With Ohio again looming on the schedule, the Falcons are once again on a winning streak of sorts, as they enter play this weekend undefeated in Anderson Arena on their home court this season at 11-0 thus far.
FALCONS UNDEFEATED IN ANDERSON ARENA
The Falcons are undefeated in Anderson Arena, now 11-0 on their home court, which is the best home opening for the Falcons since 1991 when the Falcons went 13-1 in Anderson Arena eventually winning the MAC and making the Falcons first NCAA appearance. The Falcons have held their opponents collectively to a .144 hitting percentage while the Orange and Brown are hitting a .304 in Anderson Arena.
The only team in volleyball history to go undefeated in Anderson Arena is the 1979 volleyball team.
HALM, MOHR, AND FISH DOUBLE UP
Juniors Kendra Halm and Meghan Mohr and freshman Sam Fish all doubled up last week. Halm and Fish both recorded their double-doubles in the Falcons win over Miami. Halm recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 blocks against the RedHawks. Fish recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 53 assists and 13 digs. Despite the Falcons loss to Western Michigan Mohr recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a career high 18 kills and 12 digs.
MEEK DIGS DEEP AND RECORDS 1,500TH DIG
Junior Chelsey Meek has been an essential part of the Falcons defense which is evident on the court as well as in the record books. Meek is now only the second player in BGSU history to record 1,500 digs. Meek recorded her 1,500th career dig in Anderson Arena during the Falcons win over Miami (Oct. 24). The only person that lies between Meek and the coveted BGSU record is Susie Norris with 1,596 career digs. Meek currently has 1,529 career digs and only needs 68 digs to become the number one passer in BGSU history. Meek also looks to shatter the record she set last season of 537 digs in a season, Meek currently has totaled 534 digs this season with four more regular season matches and post -season play still ahead of her.
FALCONS IN MAC LEADER BOARD
The Falcons are the second best team overall in the MAC with a .242 hitting percentage only behind #16 Ohio.
The Falcons also have four individuals in the top ten in the overall MAC leader board this week.
Junior Kendra Halm leads the MAC in blocks averaging 1.24 blocks per game with 119 blocks this season. In conference matches alone Halm leads the MAC averaging 1.47 blocks per game with 66 blocks against MAC opponents. Halm is also fourth in the MAC for hitting percentages with a .300 with 268 kills this season.
Junior Chelsey Meek is fourth in the MAC in digs averaging 5.62 digs per game totaling 434 digs this season.
Senior Stephanie Swiger is eighth in the MAC top ten in hitting percentage with a .293 totaling 300 kills.
Freshman Sam Fish is sixth in assists averaging 10.45 assists per game totaling 920 assists this season and seventh in service ace with 36 service aces averaging 0.41 aces per game.
ANDERSON ARENA RECORD BREAKERS
The Falcons have as set numerous records this season at home, breaking the record for best hitting percentage and most service aces in a three game match recording a .553 hitting percentage and 19 services aces against Buffalo (10/6/07). Falcon juniors Kendra Halm and Chelsey Meek also broke two records in Anderson Arena this season. Halm broke the record for most block assists in a four game match with 11 block assists against Central Michigan (10/12/07) and the very next match Meek broke the record for most digs in a five game match against Eastern Michigan (10/13/07) with 38 digs.
ALL-TIME SERIES IN MAC EAST
The Falcons lead all but one all-time series against MAC East opponents. The Falcons are leading Akron (23-11), Buffalo (14-1), Kent State (39-17), and Ohio (40-20). Miami (23-35) is the only MAC East division team to lead BGSU in all-times series.
BUFFALO MATCH TIME CHANGE
The Falcons will match up against Buffalo on November 9th at 6:30 p.m. instead of the original start time of 7:00 p.m.
OCTOBER GOOD MONTH FOR THE FALCONS
The month of October has been a successful month for the Falcons. The Falcons have posted a 132-104 record in month of October since 1983 with a .557 winning percentage. The Falcons have opened the month of October with a victory for two years in a row after the win over IPFW (Oct. 2). Last year the Falcons opened October with a sweep over Akron which led to an 8-1 record for the month of October.
October has been the best month for the Falcons this season. The Falcons finished the month of October 8-1. For the second straight year the Falcons have only lost one game in the month of October.
