BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior captain Whitney Taylor scored a game high 17 points as the Bowling Green State University Falcons beat the visiting University of Findlay Oilers, 61-46, in exhibition action in Anderson Arena on Monday (Nov. 5) night. Taylor and the BGSU bench were responsible for almost half (29-of-61) of the BGSU points in tonight's competition.
Findlay, a Division II representative of the GILAC, capitalized on a Bowling Green turnover in the early goings of the match-up and went on to hold a two field-goal or less lead over the Falcons for just over five minutes of the beginning portion of the exhibition.
Brittany Well's lay-up at 19:27 gave UF the initial advantage, but a quick Chelsea Albert's jumper evened the playing field seconds later. UF then took their second and final lead of the night as a result of Ashley Westenbarger's successful three-point field-goal and the Falcons found themselves in a dogfight with the Oilers.
Freshman Lauren Prochaska gave BG a short lived one-point advantage at 17:13, but the Oilers once again found themselves leading the hosts' as a result of Well's work in the paint. She would go on to finish the night with 10 points.
Prochaska's second trey in as many attempts beyond the arc set the Falcons even with the Oilers for the second time, but it was sophomore Laura Bugher's long range jumper which gave the Falcons the lead for good at 13:41. Bugher ended the night with two additional points from the free throw line.
Findlay came within striking distance of the Falcons twice in the remaining minutes of the first half cutting the lead to a single point, but was not able to regain their opening advantage. In fact, for the first 12 minutes of play, neither team was able to benefit from more than a four-point lead.
The Falcons went on to outscore UF 14-6 as a result of back-to-back runs of six and seven points, respectively, before taking a nine-point lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Despite not having a marquee shooting night themselves (18-58, 31.0%), the Falcons held UF to a 7-of-22 outing in the first half and allowed just six additional Oiler scores from the field in the second.
UF battled back in the second half and cut the lead to five at 15:56, but the point production from a combination of seven BG uniforms led to 28 second half points and the eventual Falcon victory.
Bowling Green led by as many as 18 points in the closing minute of the game.
In her first start with the Falcons, freshman Crystal Murdaugh posted a class-high nine points and six rebounds while classmates and fellow starters, Alberts and Prochaska each contributed eight points.
Sophomore forward Tara Breske led all Falcons with six defensive rebounds and a total of eight boards in the effort.
The countdown to the start of the Falcons 2007-08 season continues to lessen and in just four short days Bowling Green will open with Valparaiso inside Anderson Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Prior to the contest the Falcons will unveil their NCAA Sweet Sixteen banner. Members of that historic 31-4 team will also join together once again to celebrate last season and receive their MAC Championship rings.
