Women's Basketball to Face Toledo in Televised Contest
The Mid-American Conference has announced the Bowling Green State University women's basketball game at rival Toledo on February 2, 2008 is one of eight regular-season games that will be aired on either the FSN Ohio or Comcast Local stations ... the opening tip at Savage Hall has been changed from its original 4:30 p.m. time and is now set for 2:30 p.m. ... also on deck for MAC women's basketball will be the live airing of a league-high 10 post-season tournament match-ups from Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland in mid-March ... providing the color commentary and in-game analysis will be Jeff Phelps and Robin Mueller throughout the 2007-08 syndicated package ... not only will a majority of the squad's home games be broadcasted via Toledo local station, BCSN, the Orange and Brown will also make their first ever appearance on the Big Ten Network when they travel to Indiana to face the Hoosiers on Sunday (Dec. 16) ... the February squall with the Rockets on FSN Ohio will mark the third network to broadcast a Falcon women's basketball game in 2007 ... to date, the Falcons are 1-1 when aired on BCSN this season ... head coach Curt Miller's teams have defused the Rockets on ten straight occasions.
Frequent Flier Wins
As the Falcons take to the road for a month long hiatus from playing in Anderson Arena they can rest assured history is on their side ... on three prior occasions in which the Orange and Brown have seen a multiple-week six-game road-stand, BGSU is 13-5 and has never lost more than two games over that span ... in its first happening, the 1981-82 Falcons went 5-1 over the span of 19 days between home games on Nov. 24 and Dec. 14 ... in head coach Curt Miller's second season at BGSU, the Falcons posted a 4-2 record during a 25 day travel session with the Falcons between home games on Dec. 4 and Dec. 30, 2002 ... in its last occurrence, BG went 4-2 between home games on Nov. 30 and Dec. 30, 2004 (29 days) ... after their Dec. 5 OT loss at the hands of Notre Dame, the Falcons now prepare to live out of their suitcase as they begin a six game road-stand with stops at Indiana (Dec. 16), Mount St. Mary's (Dec. 19) and Delaware (Dec. 21) ... they will then close the second month of play with three contests in the Iowa State Tournament ... beginning Dec. 29, BGSU will play back-to-back-to-back opponents in host Iowa State, Hampton and Tennessee-Martin ... Miller and Co. will open the New Year with their final scheduled non-conference opponent, Chicago State at home on Jan. 5.
"Welcome to Indiana Basketball"
More than likely, a welcome mat will not await the Falcons outside the doors to Assembly Hall on the Indiana University campus ... the Hoosiers are 0-2 against head coach Curt Miller's teams and 2-2 all-time vs. BGSU ... the last time Miller and Co. stepped off the court in Assembly Hall, they took with them a 68-50 victory (Nov. 26, 2005) ... despite owning a 1-0 record over the Hoosiers on the road, BGSU has a 2-0 record under Miller in Bloomington, Ind. due to their pair of wins in the Hampton Inn Classic (Nov. 25-26, 2005) ... they have also beat IUPUI at Assembly Hall ... at the Hampton Inn Classic the Falcons won both games by 11 (IUPUI) and 18 (IU) points.
Remaking a Classic: Casting "Hoosiers" Falcon-Style
Upon their arrival to the IU campus the Bowling Green women's basketball program will have the chance to conduct a BG Athletic Department staff re-union of sorts ... former BGSU men's basketball head coach Dan Dakich is now on the IU basketball staff ... former BGSU Sports Information Director JD Campbell is now representing the Crimson and Cream bearing the same title and serving as the men's basketball media contact ... also in the Athletic Communications office is assistant director Kyle Kuhlman ... Kuhlman, a former graduate assistant under Campbell at BG has become the "Ollie" of the IU staff; each utilizes similar techniques when shooting free throws ... BGSU alum and former men's basketball manager Nate Weichers is also a first-year intern under Campbell.
Friends or Foes?
For the second time in four games a member of the opposing roster will be a high school teammate of a current member of the Falcon roster ... Indiana senior guard Nikki Smith joined forces with current Falcon Niki McCoy from 2002-2004 at Sylvania Northview High School in Sylvania, Ohio ... McCoy will not have the opportunity to face Smith as she is sitting out this 2007 per NCAA transfer rules seeing as she was formerly with the University of Akron for a pair of seasons ... freshman Chelsea Albert also faced a former high school teammate when the Falcons beat the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University ... Albert, a center, reunited with former Brighton High School standout Shannon Murphy, a rookie guard.
Roll Along You Road Warriors ...
In their six-plus seasons with head coach Curt Miller as the Falcons' leader, BG is 76-40 when playing any road or neutral site game ... after posting losing road/neutral records in his first two seasons, Miller's Falcons have more than doubled their ratio of wins to losses ... in 2003 BG won 12 while losing six and the next season improved to 14 wins with seven losses ... since then, the Falcons have lost a combined five games (including two in the NCAA tournament) when playing at a site that is not Anderson Arena ... throughout that time frame, the Falcons have posted a total of 40 wins ... in non-conference only road games, BGSU is 33-18 under Miller and 17-6 since 2005 ... the Falcons have posted just one losing non-conference road/neutral site record (2001) since Miller took over ... in 2007, BG averages 68.75 ppg away from Anderson Arena ... their opposition has been allotted an average of 55.5 ppg ... the Falcons have won by a +13.25 margin on the road ... Belmont's 66 points versus BG are the most scored by a home program ... Lipscomb's 42 are the least.
Five Wins to Tie - Six to Move Ahead
In his seventh season with the Orange and Brown, head coach Curt Miller is making strides through the programs' all-time coaching ranks ... Miller's club's six wins in 2007 are helping to propel the leader upward and with the win at Cornell, the 130th of his career, he is now just five W's shy of tying former Falcon head coach Jaci Clark's 135-65 seven year career record (130-61) ... Clark, the second winningest coach in Falcon women's basketball history, stood at the helm of the Orange and Brown program during the 1991-98 seasons ... current Board of Trustees member, Fran Voll, leads all women's basketball coaches with a 144-60 overall record ... Miller trails Voll by 14 wins.
Your Bench is Made of Wood - Ours is Made Heart and Steel
It is well known that every player on a team plays an important role; especially in the BGSU system ... to date, the Falcons' bench has outscored the opposing benches 159-152 (+7) ... they have also outscored the opposition on six of seven occasions ... against Florida Gulf Coast, the Falcon reserves scored 43 of the Falcons 70 points ... the FGCU bench accounted for 19 ... the 43 points were a season high for the Orange and Brown ... the Bowling Green bench has averaged 22.7 ppg ... they have allowed their foes' non-starters to average 21.7 ppg ... Tara Breske and Jennifer Uhl lead the charge with their respective 6.0 and 5.1 ppg while Tracey Pontius is a close third with 4.7 ppg ... Uhl and Pontius are also shooting above .800 from the free throw line ... Uhl also has a commanding presence under the basket with her 21 rebounds this season ... the Falcon bench is connecting on 44.9 percent of their shots from the field this season.
Best Keep Getting Better
Of the six returnees from the 2006-07 season, every veteran has set at least one new personal record this season ... while each of the six has seen their high-minutes increase, five of those six have set new point records with senior Kate Achter breaking it on consecutive occasions ... four of the six have also new totals in field goals made while the fifth tied her career high ... sophomore Laura Bugher leads the way with eight new personal bests in 2007 while classmate Tara Breske has seen six new career totals ... Bugher, Breske and classmate Sara Clapper all set or matched their career best point totals against FGCU ... Achter and fellow captain Lindsey Goldsberry each saw their latest career nights at home vs. St. Bonaventure and Valparaiso, respectively ... the Falcons are 3-0 when a veteran boasts a career shooting night ... for full individual career and season highs, turn to pages 18-31.
Too Close For Comfort[able Losses]
Including the Falcons' 86-84 OT loss versus #13 Notre Dame on Dec. 5, BG has lost by single-digits in nine in-season only losses and are 68-9 dating back to their 51-48 loss to Eastern Michigan at home on Jan. 12, 2005 ... seven of the aforementioned losses were by five-or-less points, while the Orange and Brown were defeated by three-or-less points on three occasions throughout that span ... Prior to the loss to the Irish, Bowling Green had not been defeated in a non-conference game in Anderson Arena since December 13, 2003 when the Oakland Grizzlies beat the host by seven points, 70-63 ... BG had won 13-straight non-conference games on campus post-Oakland ... BG went on to drop their next game at IUPUI, 89-74, eight days later and also dropped a pair of MAC losses for their last set of back-to-back losses ... no member of the current squad has ever road more than a one game losing streak in their career with the Orange and Brown.
More on the ND Loss ...
Once Notre Dame took the lead with 7:52 remaining in the first half, BGSU would go on to tie the score eight additional times and would lead by just one point in the second half ... a total of 10 ties and four lead changes were seen throughout the game ... in Notre Dame's final possession, the Irish looked to All-American candidate Charel Allen for the game winning jumper, but sophomore Tara Breske rejected the notion with her first blocked shot of the night and recovered the rebound with 00:02 on the clock to send the team's into a 5-minute overtime period ... in her first collegiate start, Breske tied her career high with two blocks ... in the overtime period, Bowling Green was a perfect 8-of-8 from the stripe while sinking just one field goal ... for the match, BG shot a season-high 88.5% from the free throw line ... ND, who led by as many as three at 1:09, knocked down four field goals including Allen's do-or-die jumper at 0.8 ... in the final 5-minute OT period, the Anderson Arena faithful saw the Falcons tie the score four times ... Notre Dame has not won on a last second shot since Megan Duffy's OT lay-up at 00:00 propelled the Irish over Big East foe Marquette, 66-65, on Jan. 10, 2006 ... Wednesday's outing also marked the second time in three outings, including a pair of NCAA tournament contests, versus ranked opponents where the Falcons have seen four players produce 10-plus points, in the other outing three BGSU player's fell into the double-digit category ... Achter repeated last season's performance against ND with 20 points, while Prochaska (18), Crystal Murdaugh (career-high 14) and Breske (10) also topped out at the 10-plus range ... at tip-off, Notre Dame ranked statically as the 29th scoring defense in the NCAA allowing an average of 53.7 points per game - BG's 84 points were the most a team has netted against the Irish; Maryland was a close second with 75 against ND ... both teams faced the Irish in their home arena's with Maryland pulling out the win.
Losing is a Foreign Concept
Including the Dec. 5 loss to #16 Notre Dame, seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor have experienced just 16 losses in Falcon uniforms ... three of those losses have come in the NCAA tournament ... they are the only two members of the Class of 2008 throughout the MAC to have a win in the post-season NCAA tournament while representing the league ... dating back to their freshman season (2004-05) Bowling Green has posted an 88-16 (.846) overall record ... they are the only pair of MAC seniors to have less than 20 defeats in their collegiate careers.
Making Anderson Arena "Roar"
The 2,228 fans who packed the stands of Anderson Arena to watch the Falcons compete with the Fighting Irish last Wednesday was the fifth largest group during the Curt Miller era and the thirteenth largest crowd in women's basketball history ... of the top 13, only four have come from non-conference games ... on such game, and the largest crowd in history, was recorded as the Falcons hosted the University of Florida Gators on March 17, 1993 in the first round of the NCAA tournament (4,408).
Falconstock - Rockin' Thru the 60's
In five of their six wins, and one loss, the Falcons have met or surpassed a `groovy' 60 points ... in fact, BG is averaging 72.6 ppg, good enough for the top scoring offense in the Mid-American Conference ... the Falcons are also allowing the second fewest points (60.7) amongst its peer in the league and is one of only two teams to win by a double-digit scoring margin (the Falcons lead that category with their +11.9 scoring margin)... to date, BG saw its two highest scoring games at home ... on the opening night of the season as they sunk 81 points over the Valparaiso defense while also posting 84 on Notre Dame.
More on the Falcon Scoring Machine
Kate Achter, the leading BGSU scorer, is the third ranking player in the MAC averaging 17.6 ppg ... Lauren Prochaska is also a top ten scorer with her 14.9 buckets per game (ranked ninth) ... Bowling Green and Miami remain as the only two schools to have two players in the top ten scorers in the league.
20 on the Jersey - At Least 20 in the Box Score
Since turning in her first 20 point night, a 23 pt. effort against Youngstown State in her freshman season, senior Kate Achter has notched 20-plus point nights on 12 occasions with her last coming against Notre Dame on Wednesday (Dec. 5) ... historically, when Achter scores 20 or more points the Falcons are 10-2 ... both losses are OT defeats at the hands of Notre Dame ... in her best night out, Achter threw down 32 points vs. St. Bonaventure ... of her 20+ nights, an even six have come in front of a home crowd while another six have been on the road or at a neutral site.
Wearing #2 but Making 3's
Rookie guard Lauren Prochaska 11 of 14 made 3's in the past three games accounting for a .917 accuracy ... she has seen perfect nights from behind the three-point line on two occasions - at Cornell and vs. Notre Dame ... she has connected on at least one three in six of seven games ... she is .429 on the year and ranks third in the league ... teammate Lindsay Goldsberry ranks ahead of her in second place.
Rookie Card Worth Buying ...
Freshman Lauren Prochaska is on the fast track to making her name known amongst some of the best freshman in Falcon history ... her 104 points in seven games make her 108 shy of matching the 12th best freshman season total ... she is 138 shy of making it to the top 10 ... currently she is averaging 14.9 ppg - second only to Falcon great Jackie Motycka's rookie average ... if she maintains this average through the remaining 23 games she will be projected to finish the season with 446.7 points; the second highest in Falcon history ... Motycka owns the record with 472 points in her first season ... Prochaska would be considered in good company on that list as each of BGSU's MAC Freshmen of the Year are ranked in the top 10 on the all-time frosh scoring list ... three of the top five are former FOY's (Motycka - '86, Ali Mann - '04, Sara Puthoff - '95) ... three of the top 10 are in the BGSU Hall of Fame (Motycka, Lori Ablers, Chris Tuttle) ... two graduates are not yet eligible for the BGSU HOF (Mann and Liz Honegger) ... a student-athlete must be out at least 10 years before they are eligible for HOF consideration ... one is still playing (senior guard, Kate Achter).
... Keeping In Plastic ...
Prochaska is not only an offensive threat; she currently ranks as the only underclassman in the top five of the Mid-American Conference (Prochaska is third overall) ... with her 19 steals this season, Prochaska is the team leader in the category ... she needs an additional 11 to break into the top 12 on the all-time rookie list and 14 to tie the 10th best rookie, Ali Mann, at 33 ... she is averaging 2.71 steals per game ... if she maintains this average through the remaining 23 games she will be projected to finish the season with 81.43 steals and will shatter the current record ... former coach Dee Knoblauch holds the record with 66 steals as a freshman ... teammate Kate Achter ranks second at 49 ... her seven steals at Lipscomb were not only a career-high but were also the most any frosh has tallied under head coach Curt Miller in one game.
... And Not Folding the Corners
From the field Prochaska has shot .782 in the past three games (18-23) and has not missed more than two shots in each of the past two games ... currently only eight Falcon frosh have ended their inaugural season averaging 10 or more points per game ... additionally her 4.7 rebounds per game ties the 10th best rebounding average set by freshman Pam Brown in the 2000-01 season ... if Prochaska maintains this average through the remaining 23 games she will be projected to finish the season with 141.1 rebounds; and will tie Chris Tuttle's margin from the 1979-80 season ... Tuttle ranks fifth in the freshman total rebounding category.
[Bres]Key to Avoiding the Sophomore Slump
Just seven games into the season, sophomore post Tara Breske has already surpassed her freshman seasonal totals in several statistical categories ... Breske has connected on 17 FG's in 2007 after taking just 19 in all of 2006 ... she has also matched her seasonal totals in offensive rebounds (8), assists (6), blocks (5) and steals (2) ... she has also outscored herself 40-33 ... classmate and fellow post payer Laura Bugher is also meeting her previous totals ... Bugher has posted 20 points in the seven games this season - a total she accumulated over 23 games last season ... she has also seen a total of 93 minutes of game action in 2007 after seeing just 95 totals minutes as a rookie ... to date she has nearly doubled her made field goals (5-9) and is just six rebounds shy of her 2007 mark (19-13).
Falcons Sizzle Through Six
Though the loss to ND ended the Falcons win streak, they did experience their second most successful start under head coach Curt Miller since going a perfect 8-0 to begin the 2005 season ... during that stretch in 2005, BGSU went 8-1 to close the year (Nov. and Dec.); after opening 2006 with a loss to Kentucky in overtime, that Falcon squad won 19 straight before falling to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament ... last season, BG was five points short of repeating the 8-0 start ... after winning their season opener, the Orange and Brown lost to Notre Dame in overtime, 85-81, in South Bend, Ind., but went on to win their next six contests ... since the 1974 season, BGSU has seen five starts in which they won three or more consecutive games to begin the season ... 1974 (six wins), 1988 (six wins), 1991 (five wins), 1997 (three wins), 2005 (eight wins), 2007 (four wins) ... historically, BG is 23-10 in the eleventh month of the year (Nov.) under Miller, but are 16-1 dating back to the 2005-06 season.
A Century of Wins
As the Falcons have proven a lead at the intermission, no matter how large or small, is nothing to play around with ... under head coach Curt Miller, BGSU is 105-20 and counting when taking the lead into the locker room ... in five games this season, including their comeback win over St. Bonaventure, BGSU has had at least a point on the competition ... in their largest lead, the Falcons had a +22 margin over the Valparaiso Crusaders at halftime ... more importantly, the Falcons have not only built leads; they have kept them ... in each game this season, BGSU has won by more points than they were ahead at the half.
Free Points? We'll Take `Em!
As a unit the Falcons are shooting 74 percent from the foul line and have taken 120 free throws six games into the season ... Bowling Green has converted 112-of-146 tries from the charity stripe and is the third ranking FT shooting team in the MAC... their opponents, on the other hand, have taken 133 FT's and have converted 103 into points ... Kate Achter leads all Falcons in made (46) and attempts (57) ... she also has the third best made percentage in the MAC (.807)... four other Falcons join Achter at an 80 or better percentage on the year ... in four games this season, BGSU has been sent to the line at least 20 times and has shot at, or above, 74 percent ... in their best home and away outings, the Falcons sank 27-of-31 (.871) at Belmont and 23-of-26 (.885) versus Notre Dame ... to date, St. Bonaventure is the only squad to outshoot BG from the free throw line (.741 -.821) ... against Valparaiso, the Falcons held the Crusaders to a low nine attempts.
Possession of the Ball? We'll Take That Too!
While the Orange and Brown has committed 102 turnovers this season, they have forced the opposition into giving possession back on 154 separate occasions ... five of the Falcons' opponents have committed 20 or more rule infractions this season while the sixth topped out at 18 ... Valparaiso was responsible for 29 TO's while Lipscomb saw 28; Cornell (24) Florida Gulf Coast (23), and St. Bona (21) also picked-up more than 20 against the BG defense ... BG leads the MAC with the top turnover margin (+7.43) ... their closest MAC affiliate, Central Michigan, forces an average of +2.00 TO's per game ... the Falcons also own the best assist to turnover ratio in the league (.89) ... the Falcons also have the second highest total in blocks per game with 3.43 ... Lauren Prochaska is third in the league in steals thus far averaging 2.43 per game.
The Winning Tradition
If one were to reminisce about the past 104 games in Falcon history, they more than likely would have a hard time selecting their favorite Falcon win ... dating back to the start of the 2004-05 season, Bowling Green is 88-16 (.846) ... in the post season alone, including the MAC and NCAA tournaments, Miller and Co. are 11-3 (.846) and have brought home three consecutive MAC Tournament titles.
Kate Achter - Point Doctor
After starting the season ranking 18th on the all-time scoring list, Kate Achter has moved her way to sixteenth overall with her 1,209 career points ... she sits just four points out of the top fifteen and is 14 points short of tying the 14th nest career effort ... to date, she is 203 points shy of reaching the top ten ... seven of the Top 22 players in the 1,000-Point Club have played under head coach Curt Miller ... Achter's 32 points versus St. Bonaventure also set a new personal best for the senior; previously her highest scoring game (29 pts.) was a 77-66 win at Belmont - just six days before ... in fact, the last time a Falcon scored 30-plus points was Casey McDowell's 31 point showing in the MAC Tournament on March 9, 2005 ... for those keeping track, Achter was just three points shy of tying the program record of 35 points in one game ... former Falcon Francine Miller was the last player to reach the plateau on Feb. 17, 2001; she is one of three players to hold the record and is the only player to account for 35 points in two separate contests ... Achter has scored 20+ points three times this season and has reached double-digit nights on five occasions.
Golden Arches
Lindsey Goldsberry entered the season 10th on the all-time BGSU career three-point field-goal percentage list making 35-of-97 (.361) shots from behind the arc in her first two seasons ... to open the season, Goldsberry posted a career high making 5-of-6 against Valparaiso ... she has made at least one long ball in five of six Falcon games this season ... currently she has a 42.9 percent accuracy from `downtown' ... she and Lauren Prochaska lead the Falcons with their 1.3 and 2.0 made three's per game ... she ranks second in the MAC in the three point field goal percentage category ... historically she is 44-118 (.373) and currently ranks ninth on the all-time three point percentage list.
The Opponent - Indiana
The 4-5 Hoosiers of head coach Felisha Legette-Jack sit at 0-2 against head coach Curt Miller's Falcons ... last season, BG handed the Hoosiers an 82-47 loss ... the win ranks in the top 50 of all Falcon wins coming in at a tie for 27th ... recently, the Hoosiers dropped below .500 after Kansas converted a 23-11 run into a win on Dec. 9, 2007 ... Jamie Braun has seen five games as the IU leading scorer - the Hoosiers were 2-3 over that span ... against MAC teams, IU beat in-state foe, Ball State by five points in Muncie, Indiana (76-71) ... the Hoosiers are averaging 74.3 ppg in Assembly Hall while allowing their opponents 66.7 ppg.
