DeKALB, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Some quotes from the media room after the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team's 85-76 win at Northern Illinois University on Saturday (Feb. 10) ...
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"I am ecstatic with this win. Northern Illinois is a tremendous program that gives us a ton of matchup problems, but it was an efficient, workmanlike game for us today. We were very efficient on the offensive end, and we accomplished some goals against them. In particular, we didn't want to put them on the foul line, and until (Kylie) York got the last three foul shots (with under 20 seconds remaining), we had only put them on the line seven times in the entire game. That was such a critical part of this game."
"Another key statistic for this team, and we are not always the best at this, but we are now 48-0 over the last three years when we outrebound our opponent."
(On Jasmine McCall)
"It's always someone within the top-eight of this team. There's an X factor in all the games, and our answer to (who would be the X factor) today was Jazz McCall. And, I'm proud of her because last game I was really hard on her. Even though we won against a very talented Ball State team on Wednesday, Jazz was very upset after the game. I followed it up the next day in the lockerroom; I apologized to her in front of the entire team, and I said that we wouldn't be where we are without her and that we need her in the future. And to her credit and maturity, she stepped up after probably her poorest game of the year, and had a huge game for us today. She was the difference, and that shows her maturity. She accepted my apology, stepped back up to the plate and was great off the bench for us tonight."
(On Ali Mann)
"She has had great games here. She wasn't supposed to play here a couple years ago after an injury (in the previous game). We were so far down in that game, and I looked down the bench at her, and she just said, 'Please, coach, give me a chance.' She played basically on one leg that night, and willed us to victory. I just think she really likes this arena, and you could see the fire in her eye today."
"We played Toledo in an emotional game (Sunday), we played Ball State in an emotional and physical game (Wednesday), and a lot of people thought we might have a letdown today. It almost created an underdog feel for our team, for the first time in a long time. This was a gutty performance by a veteran team today; there were a lot of reasons why we could have lost here, but we gutted it out."
(What did you do defensively against NIU's Stephanie Raymond to make things difficult for her at times?)
"I have no idea how to guard her. You can write whatever you want, because I have no idea how to guard Stephanie Raymond. We just tried to make things as hard as possible, and make her earn everything she got. In my opinion -- if no one from our team is -- she is the player of the year in this conference, and she has this program going at a high level."
"We talked about making them go two-by-two-by-two. Maybe after they made their 11th three, we got the picture. But, they are so spurtable, if that's a term. They can go on big runs in a hurry, and we just tried to limit those big runs. We stayed focus, and even when they made tough 3s, our team hung together and worked hard to avoid letting it turn into a 10-0 or 15-0 run."
"I thought we played within ourselves today. We executed, we were efficient, we didn't force things and we did a good job of recognizing the mismatches. We had another chess match today. Carol went small and had four guards on the floor, and we went big. I'm not sure who won that chess match overall, but it was fun. There were stetches where they were hurting us with small lineups, and there were stretches where we hurt them, trying to guard our big kids with guards."
"Carol is a phenomenal coach, and it is a great learning experience for both of us when our teams play, because good adjustments were made both ways. Sometimes I wish she were still at Notre Dame, but it is certainly great for our conference. She is going to do great things here."
