Falcons Look to Dim the Golden Flashes

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team finishes their Mid-American Conference six meet streak, with a home meet against Kent State University. The meet will be held this Sunday (Feb. 18) at 2:00 p.m. inside the Eppler Complex. The Falcons are returning home after a loss to Central Michigan 195.125-192.775. Kent State enters the meet currently ranked 25th in the Official NCAA Rankings for Collegiate Men's and Women's Gymnastics.
Chippewas Too Strong For Falcons
Last Sunday (Feb. 11), the Orange and Brown put up their best showing on the year with a season high of 192.775. Freshman Morgan Balzer finished second in the all-around with a score of 38.675. This places her sixth in BGSU all time all-around scores.
Senior co-captain Sakura Tomita finished tied for fourth on bars (9.750). Behind her was Ashlee deLeeuw recording a 9.725 tying her for sixth. On vault Jacque Bernhardt flipped her way to a 9.700 performance and a fourth place finish. Freshman Megan Chronister set a new career high scoring a 9.750 on floor. Bethany Kenel kept the bar set high when she scored 9.825 on beam good enough for second. Behind her was Jholeen Ponce with a score of 9.775.
Dimming the Flashes
In their last performance on Feb. 11 KSU defeated Northern Illinois 193.950-192.550. Jill Kowalski led the team winning the all-around with a score of 38.825, and a first place finish on beam (9.750). They dominated every event, with four different gymnasts winning first. On vault Kristen Peters took first with a 9.800, and on bars it was Amy Presan flipping to a 9.875.
Last season these two squads met two times once at the All-Ohio and the other in MAC competition at Kent State. First at the All-Ohio KSU took second behind Ohio State, with a score of 189.375. BGSU finished the All-Ohio in third scoring 186.700. Later in the season, KSU won again193.550-190.550. Overall the Flashes lead the series 34-11-1.
Looking Ahead
After their final MAC meet the Falcons will head to Missouri in the CAT Classic. The meet will be a two-day event Feb. 23-24 with Friday's meet beginning at 7:00 p.m.
