FALCONS CONCLUDE SIX-GAME STRETCH AGAINST MAC WEST
Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan will meet for the 79th time as the Falcons play the final of six straight games against the MAC West. The Falcons are coming off a 73-51 loss at NIU, while EMU fell at home to Buffalo, 74-64. BGSU won both meetings a year ago, 79-72 in Ypsilanti and 73-71 in Bowling Green.
SAMARCO IS THE MAC'S TOP SCORER, CLOSES IN ON 1,000-POINTS
BGSU senior Martin Samarco is the MAC's top scorer averaging 19.6 points per game. He had his 22nd 20+point effort with his 21 points against Ball State. He was named MAC East Player of the Week (1/8) for the second time this season after his 43-point performance against Buffalo. He made a career-high 16 field goals and tied his career-best with seven three-point field goals. He also was honored earlier this season (12/18) and has been chosen for the award four times in his career. He is the top returning scorer in the MAC after he finished second in the league averaging 18.9 points per game. He also is fourth all-time in three-point field goals made at BGSU with 157. He had a school record 100 last season. He has scored 997 career points and is looking to be the eighth player under Dan Dakich to score 1,000-points or more in a career for the Falcons.
MORE 1,000 POINT CLUB FACTS
There are currently 34 members of the 1,000-point club at BGSU. The last player to join the club was Josh Almanson in the 2004-05 season. Samarco would also be the second junior college transfer to score 1,000-points or more for the Falcons and fourth player in school history to reach the mark in less than two seasons. Tommy Harris scored 1,137 points for BGSU from 1975-77 after coming to BGSU from Vincennes Junior College. Harris, Jim Darrow (1957-59, 1,035 points), and James Gerber (1950-52, 1,022 points) also joined the club in their second season. Harris and Darrow did it in 47 games, Samarco will play his 53rd game on Saturday and Gerber also accomplished the feat in 53 games.
LEFELD NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Bowling Green State University senior center Matt Lefeld (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV team for the second time in as many years. He is now eligible to become an Academic All-American. He holds a 3.97 grade point average in Supply Chain Management and has started 51 career games for the Falcons. He is averaging 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 14 minutes per game. For the last two seasons, he has battled severe foot pain which has limited his availability in practice and in games.
ABOUT EMU
The Eagles are without their leading scorer Carlos Medlock who suffered a broken foot earlier this season. He was averaging 13.2 points per game. Junior Jesse Bunkley is averaging 10.6 points per game, freshman Brandon Bowdrey is averaging 7.6 points and 5.2 boards and freshman Devon Dumes is chipping in 7.4 points.
SAMARCO INVITED TO PORTSMOUTH INVITATIONAL
Senior guard Martin Samarco has been invited to participate in the 2007 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament April 4th thru April 7 in Portsmouth, Virginia. The event includes the top 64 seniors in the country (eight teams of eight players) who will participate in the only post-season event prior to the Chicago Draft Camp. The four-day tournament will have each team playing 12 games at Churchland High School. Samarco is fifth all-time in BGSU history averaging 19.6 points per game.
