Bowling Green Concludes Spring Tournament Season in Tampa

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green will close the spring tournament season with a trip to Tampa, Fla. to compete in the University of South Florida Speedline tournament. The weekend tournament will begin on Mar. 16 with Pool play and will move to bracket play Mar. 17-18. Bowling Green will face Florida International, Chattanooga, and George Mason in Pool D.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The Falcons are scheduled to open the Speedline tournament with a doubleheader action against George Mason (10:00 a.m.) and Chattanooga (12:30 p.m.) on March 16 and will round out Pool D competition on Saturday morning versus Florida International ... the luck of the Irish will need to be with the Falcons as they enter bracket play at a time to be determined on March 17 ... the tournament will close Sunday at a time yet to be determined.
SWIMMING IN THE OTHER POOLS
The 12 team tournament features one MAC school in each of the pools ... Ball State, Buffalo, and Kent will join the Falcons for early conference scouting opportunities.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
Currently the Falcons are 10-3 on the season and have won both tournaments in which they have participated ... BGSU won the Panera Bread Challenge (Feb. 23-25 ) and the Charleston Southern Tournament (Mar. 2-4) ... seven of BGSU's nine starters have cracked at least one homerun thus far ... five of those seven have two or more ... BGSU is leading their opponents 59-23 in runs scored and are out hitting their opponents 84-58 ... BGSU also leads their opponents 147-79 in total bases and is slugging a combined .451 and is batting .258.
FALCONS WIN CHARLESTON SOUTHERN CHALLENGE
The Champion Falcons posted a +21 run differential and a 5-1 record at the Charleston Southern Tournament. The Orange and Brown move to 9-2 overall ... BGSU joins the likes of Iowa State (2006), Tennessee (2005), the College of Charleston (2004) and UNC Greensboro (2003) as tournament champions.
FALCON PITCHING
From the hill, Bowling Green has walked just 11 batters and has struck out 97 batters ... as a collective unit, the trio has an ERA of 1.69 ... the Orange and Brown have allowed nine doubles and four homeruns ... no batter has connected for a 3B trot against the Falcons ... junior Emily Gouge leads the staff with 55 K's in 39.2 innings pitched ... Gouge is 4-1 on the season and has three shout out wins ... sophomore Hayley Wiemer boasts a 1.84 ERA and leads the Falcons with four complete games pitched ... she has tossed 30 K's and has one strikeout ... freshman Sharon Palma has thrown 12 K's in 9.1 innings and has two wins on the season ... both Palma and Gouge have recorded no hitters this season ... Palma's 8-0 victory came in five innings over St. Francis (Feb. 24) while Gouge's 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure was a near perfect win after allowing just one walk ... the trio has held their opponents bats to a .180 batting average.
FALCON BATTING
The Falcons have hit a total of 14 homers in their first 13 games of the season ... last season, the Falcons hit a total of 28 on the year ... junior Allison Vallas and senior Jeannine Baca are the only Falcons to have at least one double, triple and homerun this season ... Wiemer currently leads the Falcons with a .389 batting average and a .778 slugging percentage ... she has hit four deep balls to lead the Falcons ... she also leads the offense with 28 total bases and has been walked a team-high eight times ... Baca and fellow senior Ashley Zirkle are both currently batting over .300 ... Baca is batting .375 and slugging .575 while Zirkle is batting .306 and slugging .417.
INSIDE THE BATTERS BOX
George Mason (3/16, 10:00 a.m.)
The Patriots are off to a fast start posting a 7-8 record after going 8-48 last season ... George Mason has lost just one pitcher ad returns experience in eight position players ... GMU beat common opponent Brown 5-2 on Mar. 11 ... GMU leads the series 1-0 with their win coming in the 2002 season.
Chattanooga (3/16. 12;30 p.m.)
Despite winning the Panera Bread Challenge hosted by the Mocs (15-14), BGSU and UTC have yet to meet this season ... against common opponents, UTC has beat Akron 3-2 (Feb. 24) and Miami (OH) 4-3 (Feb. 25) but lost to Maine 5-2 (Feb. 24) ... BGSU will be the fourth MAC opponent for the Mocs and are 2-1 ... Central Michigan beat UTC 2-1 on Mar. 10 at the USF adidas tournament ... Florida International (3/17, 10:00 a.m.)
The Panthers are 10-17 on the season and have yet to win a game on neutral dirt in four tries ... the program have yet to play a common opponent ... FIU dropped their first 12 outings ... but have won seven of their last eleven games ... the Falcons are tied all-time with the Panthers 1-1 ... they last met in 2006. where BGSU won 5-4.
