BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team is in Muncie, Indiana this weekend for the Ball State Invitational. The Falcons began the tournament with a 7-1 win over Le Moyne College. Host school, Ball State and Evansville are also competing in the invitational.
Senior Tyler Johnson continued his domination thus far in 2007, improving his record to 3-0 after surrendering just one run in an eight-inning stint on the mound. Johnson now owns a 1.17 season ERA. Fellow Tri-Captain Josh Dietz led the way offensively, contributing three hits and two RBI.
Bowling Green took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and led the entire way. Senior Mike Barnard began the inning with a base knock into center field. A sacrifice bunt and single later, Barnard was pushed to third base. The Senior class continued to shine in this contest as Senior Jeff Telmanik hit his first of two SAC flies in the game to score Barnard. The next two batters picked up singles, good for another Falcon run.
The Falcon offense re-ignited the following innning, totaling four more scores. A bases-loaded walk, Telmanik's second SAC fly and Dietz's two-RBI double were responsible for the Brown and Orange's four runs.
Le Moyne College managed to squeeze home a lone run in the home-half the inning on a sacrifice fly of their own. That score would be their only run, however. Sophomore Ryan Shay added the Falcons seventh run with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth.
Sophomore Dusty Hawk relieved Johnson for the ninth inning and retired the first three batters to clinch the victory.
Next up in the round robin weekend invitational is an 11:00 AM matchup with Evansville. The Purple Ace are coming off a 9-3 win over Ball State in the tournament's opening game Friday morning.
