BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Fielding errors and unearned runs continued to doom the Bowling Green State University baseball team in a pair of losses to Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon. BGSU was defeated 10-2 in game one, followed by a 11-8 loss in the second contest.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Falcons cut into Eastern Michigan's two run lead with a score in the third inning. Three Falcon singles produced the run as Sophomore Ryan Shay's blistering groundball right back up the middle plated Sophomore Marty Baird.
BGSU score another run the following inning when two doubles created a 2-2 score. Senior Eric Lawson sent a pitch just over the right fielder's head for the RBI-double.
EMU managed to sneek a run home in the sixth before the wheels came off for the Falcon defense in the seventh. Sophomore Chris Gacom began the seventh by making a diving snag on a popped up bunt. Senior Tyler Johnson fanned the next Eagle batter for out number two. However, the next to cracks of the bat resulted Falcon fieling errors which eventually allowed EMU to score four unearned runs in the inning. Eastern Michigan added three more runs (two unearned) the final two innings to secure the 10-2 victory.
GAME TWO RECAP
Bowling Green banged out 10 more hits in game two just as they had in the opening game. Sophomore Brian Hangbers swung the lumber well with a 3-for-5 day, including a homerun, two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Robbie Moffett recorded his first collegiate hit, an RBI-double, against his older brother's (Matt) former team (Matt was a member of the EMU baseball team from 2002-06). Freshman Derek Spencer continued to impress with two hits in as many at bats, raising his batting average to .471.
The Brown and Orange trailed 11-3 heading into the home-half of the seventh, but began a late inning rally there with two runs. Moffett, Spencer and Hangbers each drove home a run in the bottom of the ninth to trim the Falcon defict to three runs. Unfortunately, that's as close as it would get for the Falcons in an 11-8 defeat.
Game three is scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM. The probable starter for BGSU is Junior Nick Cantrell.
