CHARLESTON, S.C. - Highly decorated sophomore pitcher Hayley Wiemer has earned yet another award as she was named the Charleston Southern Tournament MVP. Fellow Falcons Emily Gouge and Susan Sontag were recognized as all-tournament team performers.
Wiemer had an outstanding weekend both as a pitcher and a batter. From the batters box Wiemer was the only Falcon to slam a homerun once a day for three straight days at the tournament. She batted .625 (10-16) on the weekend and collected eight RBI's. The sophomore began the weekend going 2-3 in the loss to Brown with a homerun and two RBI's. She closed day one by throwing three K's in seven innings in the win over Campbell and was 1-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a scored run. The next day, the Sylvania, Ohio native tossed a personal tournament-high seven K's past the Providence batters and allowed just one Friar a hit in seven innings. She also hit a homer off the Providence pitching staff and drove in a pair of runs in the 8-0 victory. The sophomore also went 1-2 against Hartford with two walks and one RBI and was 2-3 against Charleston Southern with an opposite field homerun, a walk and three RBI's. During the weekend she was walked five times.
Gouge's success was recognized as she was named to the all-tournament teams. In 20 2/3 innings she hurled 34 K's and tossed a season high 12 K's against St. Bonaventure. The junior also, threw double-digit K's against Brown with 10 and just five hits in the full game. The Vero Beach, Fla. native tossed five K's in three innings against Hartford and an additional seven in four innings against Charleston Southern. Her weekend was highlighted as she struck out the side in the fifth inning of the St. Bonaventure game and did the same in the seventh inning against Hartford.
Sontag earns her first individual honor in the Orange and Brown with her nomination to the all-tournament team. The freshman's highlight of the week included a homerun against Providence which ran in two RBI's. Her best batting days came against Providence (2-3) and St. Bonaventure (1-2). With four hits in 13 at bats, she batted .308 on the weekend.
This was the second-straight tournament championship for Bowling Green. The Falcons join the likes of Iowa State (2006), Tennessee (2005), the College of Charleston (2004) and UNC Greensboro (2003) as tournament champions. BGSU opened the season with a victory at the Panera Bread Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn. in late February.
Bowling Green will remain in Charleston, S.C. for the next three days and will play a double-header on Wednesday with St. Bonaventure. Game one is set for noon.
