BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Thanks to a Hayley Wiemer blast to right center that cleared the outfield fence by at least 10-feet, the 2007 BGSU Falcons (23-6, 8-2) have tied the single season homerun record with 29 HRs hit in as many games played. The 2006 Falcons set the record last season. Also, with the sweep of the MAC weekend, including a 7-3 decision over Ball State (15-25, 6-6) today, Bowling Green earns their first MAC four-game sweep since the March 31-April 2, 2006 road series at Buffalo and Kent State.
As a result of unseasonable weather, today's contest was the first Sunday match-up played by the Falcons since their March 18 loss to Boston University in the championship game of the USF Speedline Tournament.
Ball State became one of seven teams to score against the Falcons in the first inning when they picked up two of their three runs in their first outing at bat. The runs negated the streak of goose eggs Ball State had laid against BGSU dating back to the 2004 season.
The 2-0 deficit did not last long for the Falcons as Wiemer triggered her seventh homerun of the season arching past the outfield staff and just about sank a hole-in-one at the Forrest Creason Golf Course behind the BGSU Softball Field in the bottom of the third. Wiemer trotted behind Jeanine Baca for the duo of Orange and Brown runs. Susan Sontag's single with bases loaded returned Allison Vallas from third and Dawnjene DeLong from second for a then two run Falcon cushion. In the fourth, BGSU batters in the 1-9 holes faced BSU's Elizabeth Milian scoring four runs on three hits while leaving an additional two still in scoring position.
Thorough four complete innings, BGSU held a 4-2 lead over the visiting Cardinals.
In the bottom of the fifth, BGSU stretched their lead by adding an additional three runs. The offensive effort was sparked by Ashley Zirkle's score from third base when the BSU's third baseman Taylor Yancy made the last minute decision to hurl one to first for the possible out and overthrew her intention to eliminate Brittnay Hay's base hit. Yancy's toss cleared the glove of Amanda Pick and Zirkle returned home safely for the fifth Falcon score. Designated player Lauren Hoffman's following double returned Hay and DeLong in the next at bat extending BGSU's lead to 7-2.
Ball State attempted to bring it's rally magic from Friday's series at Toledo scoring Allie Pennock in the sixth, but was unable to overcome the BGSU defense. Beginning in the second inning, the Cards did not send more than the automatic three batters to the plate until the sixth inning.
BSGU once again out hit their opponent, slapping nine while BSU slipped in four. Each team finished the contest with a two errors.
In her sixth complete game of the season, Wiemer threw seven strikeouts. On the weekend she earned 22 K's in MAC dominance.
Bowling will have 24 hours to relax before they begin a four opponent road-stand. Detroit will kick-off the Falcons' travel plans on Tuesday for a pair against the Titans beginning at 3:00 p.m. for what could be the Falcons last non-conference outing. Bowling Green will then tour the MAC West for a twin-bill with Eastern Michigan on Friday (1:00 p.m.) and will play singles at Central Michigan on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.). The Falcons will close the month with the I-75 series at rival Toledo April 28-29.
