TOLEDO, Ohio - Despite finding three hits on the day, the Bowling Green Falcons (27-9, 10-5) found ways to score and held off two late jams by the Toledo Rockets (8-29, 3-12) to produce a 3-0 win at the Findlay Athletic Complex on the campus of the University of Toledo. Susan Sontag hit her sixth homerun of the season in the fifth inning and becomes the only Falcon freshman to hit more than a handful in their first season with the team.
In an unusual sequence of events, Jeanine Baca scored on a passed ball after being walked and stealing her 14th base of the season. The senior scored from third base on a passed ball during Allison Vallas' first at bat. Toledo pitcher Stephanie Moore attempted to cover home to make the out but was unable to get a glove on the flip from her catcher.
The Falcons 1-0 lead carried into the top of the second and was soon 2-0 in the visitor's favor. After being struck by the pitcher for the sixth time this season, Dawnjene DeLong advanced to second via a Brittnay Hay groundout and took possession of third base courtesy of a Moore wild pitch. Sontag joined DeLong in the offense by way of a walk and moved to second on a throw during Carly Riepenhoff's at bat. Riepenhoff was then called out on a grounder to the pitcher. Under normal circumstances the play would have been routine, but when the UT defense could not decide where to make the tail end of the double play, DeLong made it home safely scoring the second BG run while Sontag was out at third.
Bowling Green sat comfortably with the 2-0 edge through the end of four innings.
With one out at her back, Sontag booted a solo homerun and pushed the Falcons further ahead of the Rockets at 3-0.
Toledo made two similar runs at the Falcons with simultaneous runners on the second and third base bags, but pitcher Hayley Wiemer and the BG defense eliminated any potential UT scoring opportunities. In the sixth Wiemer needed just six pitches to end the inning with a pair of strikeouts. She also stranded two Rocket runners in the seventh as she tossed a trio of strikes to earn the second out and a grounder to DeLong at short ended the game.
Wiemer struckout eight in the victory while Moore threw seven K's. Bowling Green was out hit 6-3 but no more than the previously mentioned two Rockets advanced to the hot corner.
The Falcons will make the trip on North I-75 again tomorrow to finish their regular season road portion of the schedule. Bowling Green and Toledo will meet at 1:00 p.m.
