OXFORD, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball dropped a 5-3 decision Saturday evening in game two of a three-game weekend series at Miami. Sophomore Brian Hangbers was responsible for the Falcons three runs as he pulled a pitch over the right-field wall for a three-run homerun.
Senior Adam Gumpf hurled 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in the losing effort.
Junior Nick Cantrell got the start for the Brown and Orange and came out strong early, retiring the first six batters all on ground outs before rain showers caused a 40-minute delay in the top of the third inning. Following the delay, Cantrell forced two more ground balls before finally allowing baserunner. Miami later knocked that runner home for the first run of the contest.
The RedHawk lineup continued to produce the next inning, posting three runs in the frame. Several "seeing eye" singles were the key to MU's fourth inning. Miami added another score in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 advantage. With the bases loaded and just one out, Gumpf emerged from the bullpen and forced an inning-ending double play.
Bowling Green began a comeback in the sixth inning with a pair of singles before Hangbers stepped into the batter's box. The Hamilton, Ohio native delivered a three-run bomb as mentioned above to trim the Falcon deficit to just two runs.
Hangbers later laced a two-out triple in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the next hitter slapped a chopper to the pitcher for the easy out. Hangbers was just a double shy of batting for the cycle.
Game three is scheduled for a 1 PM start on Sunday afternoon at McKie Field in Hayden Park. Sophomore Dusty Hawk (0-2, 6.27 ERA) is the probable starter for Bowling Green.
