Hayley Wiemer Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University softball standout Hayley Wiemer has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced late Thursday (April 5). Wiemer, a sophomore, earns the honor for the second time in her career, having also been named the S-A-O-W on March 8.
Wiemer, a native of Sylvania, Ohio (St. Ursula Academy), hit a whopping .714 in five games last week, with 10 hits in 14 at-bats. She had a slugging percentage of 1.214 and an on-base pct. of .765, with a pair of homers and eight RBI in the five games.
In the circle, Wiemer had a record of 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 12 innings pitched.
Wiemer had four multiple-hit games on the week, including a 3-for-3 effort in BGSU's 11-1 win at Michigan State. In that contest, she had three runs scored and three batted in, with a walk, a double and a stolen base.
On Friday (March 30), the sophomore was 2-for-3 with two homers in the second game of the day vs. Kent State. The two homers tied a single-game record.
Wiemer was 5-for-6 in a Saturday (March 31) doubleheader sweep of Buffalo, as the Falcons put a total of 18 runs on the scoreboard. In the opening game vs. the Bulls, she was 3-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored, and she was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in the nightcap.
Wiemer batted .636 (7-for-11) in the four MAC games last weekend.
In the circle, she allowed only two runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, but suffered the loss in the opener vs. KSU. She threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief in that day's second game, striking out three without allowing a walk.
Wiemer got the win in the first UB game, allowing two runs in four innings.
On the year, she is hitting an eye-popping .448 to date, with six doubles, six homers and 22 RBI in 23 games. Wiemer leads the team in homers (tied for team lead), RBI, slugging (.806) and OBP (.525). She is 7-3 in the circle, with a 1.85 ERA this season to date.
The Falcons are 17-6 overall and 2-2 in MAC action, heading into Friday's (April 6) doubleheader at Ohio.
In the classroom, Wiemer maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as an adolescent/young adult science education major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week during the academic year. Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and have performed well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
