TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team improved to 3-1 in Mid-American Conference play with a 5-2 win over Miami University Friday afternoon (April 6). The MAC dual was held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-5 overall and -- as mentioned -- 3-1 in MAC action. Head coach Penny Dean's club has matched the conference win total for all of last season. The RedHawks drop to 8-11 and 2-3, respectively.
BGSU swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. At the top flight, junior Jenna Nussbaum and sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin put together an 8-4 win over the RedHawks' team of Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova, while the Falcons' second-flight tandem of soph Stefanie Menoff and junior Andrea Volle were 8-3 winners over the duo of Leda Pesatova and Victoria Pulido.
At the third flight, senior Ashley Jakupcin and freshman Samantha Kintzel outlasted MU's Kelly Douple and Kristen McPhillips in a tiebreaker, while senior Erica Wolfe and soph Libby Harrison won a 'fourth-flight' doubles match that was not included in the overall match scoring. The Harrison/Wolfe team won by an 8-4 result.
In singles action, the Falcons took four of the six matches, and BG was 3-0 in matches that went to three sets. Ashley Jakupcin rallied from a first-set setback for a win over Lomidze at the top flight, while Kintzel posted the Falcons' most convincing singles win of the day, losing only three total games in her win over Pesatova (6-1, 6-2) at flight number two.
Jirouskova and McPhillips picked up straight-set wins for the RedHawks at the third and fourth flights, respectively, but BGSU won three-set matches at each of the bottom two flights. Freshman Katia Babina went to a third set against Pulido at the fifth flight before pulling out the victory, while Menoff rallied back after a 6-1 first-set loss for a sixth-flight win over Douple.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday afternoon (April 7), hosting Ball State University in a 1:00 p.m. start at Shadow Valley.
