BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Ken White to the position of assistant men's soccer coach. White, who was most recently the senior assistant coach at the University of Louisville through 2006, will work with the Falcons' goalkeepers.
"Over the past two seasons the team has made great strides to return the program to one of excellence," said head coach Fred Thompson. "With the addition of Coach White, I am positive there will be an acceleration to this goal as I expect to see noticeable changes on and off the field starting immediately."
White, the recipient of the Goalkeeper Award from the Irish Football Association (Northern Ireland), holds 'A' licenses from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) as well as a 'Full' coaching badge from the Football Association of Ireland and a 'National Youth License' from the USSF. He also has ties to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as a staff and goalkeeper coach and has earned a 'premier' and 'national' goalkeeping diploma from the same organization.
Since beginning his career in 1978 at the University of Tampa as the assistant/goalkeeper coach, White has been associated with five collegiate programs and has made the trip to the NCAA Tournament twice. Additionally, he has experience at the professional level serving as the head coach and general manager of the USL's New Orleans Gamblers (1991-1994) and the Colorado Springs Stampede (1995-2000). White also has administrative experience at both the collegiate and club levels.
"I could not be more happy with this hiring," said Thompson. "I am thrilled to have a coach of Ken's caliber and ability to join the staff. He has been in this business for many years and still maintains a heightened level of passion for the game."
White's experience also surpasses coaching and expands to the player development arena. The goalkeeper coach has worked with players from the English Premier League/First Division team including the Arsenal Football Club, one of the most successful professional clubs in English football. He also coached Roy Wegerle to the US National Team as well as former MLS contender Tampa Bay Mutiny and current MLS participants the Colorado Rapids.
As a scholarship athlete, White began his career at the University of South Florida in goal on nationally ranked Bulls teams that made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in finance he played for the Cork Hibernians in the League of Ireland as the reserve team keeper. White later furthered his education and earned his masters in Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy.
The Cork, Ireland native plans to reside in Bowling Green with his dog Pax.
