BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Shortly after earning ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District distinctions, co-BGSU Offensive Players of the Year Hayley Wiemer and Allison Vallas are furthering their reputation as model student-athletes and have been named to the Academic All-MAC roster. This is the second year the kudos have been given to Vallas and the first for Wiemer.
Through three full semesters of studying Adolescent/Young Adult & Secondary Science Education Wiemer has kept a perfect 4.00 GPA intact and was they only student-athlete to maintain the flawless grade point average. She also was just one of two sophomores to find themselves on the Academic All-MAC team.
As a repeat selection participating in the Physical Education Teacher Education program, Vallas carried a 3.93 GPA. The junior's cumulative grade point average was just a hundredth of a point behind Central Michigan's Suzie Giroux (3.94) and was good enough for third highest on the list.
Throughout the season, Wiemer was a two-time Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree while Vallas was picked once for the award. They also spent the season battling to break Gina Rango's 2006 single season homerun record - Wiemer accomplished the feat by hitting her 11th during the conference tournament while Vallas swung for the fences on nine occasions of her own. The two contributed almost half (20) of the Falcons' record breaking 47 and are in the top three of almost every statistical batting and fielding category on the team. Eight of the 18 student-athletes voted to the Academic All-MAC team were also recognized at the conclusion of last week's MAC Tournament at Currie Stadium in Midland, Mich. Both Vallas and Wiemer were amongst those MAC players to be elected to the first team for their athletic and academic accomplishments.
The Mid-American Conference reports the Academic All-MAC Women's Softball team as those student-athletes who were voted in by the league's faculty athletic representatives. Due to ties in the voting the squad was expanded to 18. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees - whichever is greater.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. Nominees must have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average to be eligible for the team.
