BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team is in the midst of preparations for the 2007 season, the 11th campaign in program history. Members of the Falcon squad reported Sunday (Aug. 12), and kicked things into high gear Monday (Aug. 13), with the 'Falcon Fitness Test' in the morning, followed by a pair of practices in the afternoon and evening.
Head coach Andy Richards begins his eighth season at the helm of the Falcons, and welcomes back a total of 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team. The 2006 BGSU squad, with 12 newcomers on the 24-woman squad, finished 10-10-0 overall and tied for third in the Mid-American Conference with a 7-4-0 league ledger.
This season, Richards and assistant coaches Scott Gloden and Britt Anderson have four seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and seven freshmen (including one redshirt freshman) on the 25-player roster.
"We are very excited to start the preseason, particularly with the large group of returnees as well as a solid group of freshmen," said Richards. "The newcomers have already made a statement, as everyone passed the dreaded 'Falcon Fitness Test' this (Monday) morning.
"We are pleased to have everyone back and healthy, and we are ready to get going."
The Brown and Orange will play one exhibition game, hosting Morehead State on Saturday, Aug. 25. The season begins Friday, Aug. 31, with a match at West Virginia, and the home portion of the regular season commences two days later -- Sunday, Sept. 2 -- with a noontime match vs. Eastern Illinois at Cochrane Field.
