Falcons Fall at West Virginia, 4-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Nationally-ranked West Virginia University used a pair of two-goal bursts to down the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 4-0, Friday night (Aug. 31). The game, the season opener for both teams, was held before a crowd in excess of 700 at WVU's Dick Dlesk Stadium.
WVU's Deana Everrett had a pair of goals and added an assist. She got the scoring started at the 24:06 mark of the first half off of a corner kick from teammate Ashley Banks.
Just over three minutes later, Banks headed home a ball from Everrett to give the hosts a 2-0 margin, and the score remained the same into the half.
Everrett scored her second goal of the night at the 55:41 mark, and Amanda Cicchini closed the scoring just 2:17 later.
The Mountaineers held a 20-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 margin in shots on goal. Mallory Beck earned the win in goal for WVU, making one save. For the Brown and Orange, junior Christy Zabek made three saves in working the first 59:36, while senior Tiffany Hansen played a scoreless final 30-plus minutes and made one stop.
A total of 20 different players saw action in the game for BGSU, including six of the Falcons' seven newcomers. Freshman Meagan Moran drew the start in her first collegiate match, while sophomore transfer Carolyn Nesline also was in the starting 11.
Frosh Alicia Almond, Sarah Haferkamp, Katie Stephenson and Jackie Tamerlano all made their respective collegiate debuts, seeing action off the bench vs. WVU.
The Brown and Orange will return to Northwest Ohio to prepare for the home opener, which will be Sunday afternoon (Sept. 2). The Falcons will entertain Eastern Illinois University in a noon start at Cochrane Field.
