Falcons Enjoy Success in Day One of BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team kicked off a new era in successful fashion Saturday (Sept. 15), opening the 2007-08 season and christening the team's new facility. The Falcons hosted first-day action in the BGSU Invitational at the new varsity tennis complex, and three BG individuals advanced to the championship match of their respective singles flights.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Christine Chiricosta won a pair of matches to advance to the singles final in flight 2. Senior Andrea Volle and junior Stefanie Menoff each went 2-0 in singles action as well, making it to the championship matches in flights 5 and 7, respectively.
Junior Libby Harrison will compete in the third-place match in flight 6 action on Sunday (Sept. 16), while junior Kelsey Jakupcin (flight 1), sophomores Samantha Kintzel (flight 3) and Katia Babina (flight 4) and senior Jenna Nussbaum (flight 7) all will compete in a back-draw final on Sunday.
Four of BGSU's five singles losses went to a third-set tiebreaker, including Jakupcin's first match at the top flight. She won a first-set tiebreaker over Youngstown State's Anna Volkova by an 11-9 result, dropped the second set, then battled Volkova through a third-set 'breaker before falling by that same 11-9 score.
Jakupcin would respond from that heartbreaking loss by breezing past Akron's Tanya Gombera (6-2, 6-0) in her second match of the day.
Chiricosta lost a total of only eight games in her two straight-sets wins, over UA's Carolina Castro Cota and Toledo's Maha Guirguis. Chiricosta will meet Xavier's Aylin Seyalioglu in Sunday's championship.
Volle also posted a pair of two-set wins at the fifth flight, losing a total of just nine games on the day. She will also meet a Xavier opponent, Jill Ducro, in Sunday's final.
Menoff won her seventh-flight matches in straight sets to earn a matchup with Cleveland State's Charlotte Gibbons in the championship round.
In doubles play, one round of action was completed in each flight on Saturday. The Falcon teams of Jakupcin/Nussbaum (flight 1), Chiricosta/Kintzel (flight 2) and Babina/Menoff (flight 4) all were victorious in opening-round play.
No team scores are kept in the BGSU Invitational. Flight champions will be crowned in each of seven singles and four doubles rounds on Sunday. Action begins at 9:00 a.m.
