Chiricosta, Menoff Wrap Up Undefeated Weekend at BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Christine Chiricosta and Stefanie Menoff each won flight titles in both singles and doubles, going undefeated in the season's opening weekend as the Bowling Green State University tennis team hosted the BGSU Invitational this weekend. The Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 15-16) tournament kicked off the 2007-08 season for the Falcons.

No team scores were kept at the meet, which featured competitors from Akron, Bradley, Cleveland State, Detroit, Toledo, Xavier and Youngstown State, in addition to Penny Dean's Falcons.
Chiricosta, in her first weekend of collegiate action, was the champion at the second singles flight, while Menoff won the seventh flight. In doubles, Chiricosta teamed up with sophomore Samantha Kintzel to win the title at the second doubles flight, while Menoff and soph Katia Babina breezed to a doubles crown at the fourth flight.
The Falcons went a combined 26-9 on the weekend. BGSU singles competitors were 16-7 overall, while the Falcon doubles teams were an aggregate 10-2. All four of the doubles teams had records of 2-1 or 3-0.
On Sunday, Chiricosta swept XU's Aylin Seyalioglu to win her singles crown, then teamed up with Kintzel for 8-1 and 8-5 doubles victories en route to that title.
Menoff won her Sunday singles match by the same score -- 6-2, 6-3 -- that Chiricosta had. Menoff's win game against CSU's Charlotte Gibbons.
Menoff now has a combined record of 16-2 in the BGSU Invitational during her career. She has won singles and doubles crowns in each of the last two seasons, capturing the flight 6 singles and flight 3 doubles titles last September.
Kintzel captured a doubles crown for the second time in as many seasons at the BGSU event. She teamed with Menoff to win a title last year before combining with Chiricosta this season.
Kintzel was 2-1 in singles play this weekend, winning the back draw at the third flight after losing her opening match on Saturday. Classmate Babina and senior Jenna Nussbaum also rebounded after opening-match losses to finish fifth, at the fourth and seventh flights, respectively.
Senior Andrea Volle went 2-1 in singles on the weekend, winning her two Saturday matches to advance to Sunday's title tilt before falling to XU's Jill Ducro at the fifth level.
Junior Libby Harrison won two of her three singles matches at the sixth flight, finishing third in her eight-player bracket.
In doubles, the team of Nussbaum and Kelsey Jakupcin went 2-1 at the top flight, finishing third. The duo of Harrison and Volle also won two-out-of-three (and two out of three ain't bad) to place fifth at the third doubles level.
The Falcons' next competition will come on Oct. 5-7, when BGSU heads to Cincinnati to compete in the Queen City Invitational. That is BG's only other tournament prior to the ITA Regional.
