Tyler Masters Named Goaltending Coach For The 2007-08 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University head hockey coach Scott Paluch has announced that former Falcon-star Tyler Masters has been named a graduate assistant for the upcoming 2007-08 season. Masters (1999-2003), who will serve as the goaltending coach, will join Paluch (1984-88) and assistant coaches Doug Schueller (1997-2001) and Todd Reirden (1990-94) to add yet another alum to the first-ever all-alumni hockey staff.
"We're excited to have Tyler [Masters] join our staff as our goaltending coach," said Paluch. "He was an outstanding student athlete here and he'll bring great experience of the goaltending position to our staff."
Prior to returning to the BGSU for graduate work, Masters played four seasons of professional hockey. His professional career included stops with the Cincinnati Cyclones (2003-04) and Louisiana IceGators (2004-05) of the ECHL, along with playing time for both the Fort Wayne Komets (2004-05) and Richmond Riverdogs (2005-06) of the UHL.
In his final professional season, Masters played in 36 games for the Komets and posted a 20-12-2 record. He recorded four shutouts and posted a 2.68 goals against average with a save percentage of .903, before ending his season with the Riverdogs where he played two games in net.
Masters earned his professional career after four seasons with the Falcons where he ended his career ranking second in career-games played by a BG goaltender (114). He then ranks second all-time in Falcon history in career-saves (3,286) and goals against average (3.11), while his .906 career-save percentage ranks third.
The Calgary, Alberta native had seven-career shutouts as a Falcon, which ranks tops on the all-time BG list. His .922 save percentage in 38 games during the 2000-01 season, still ranks first then on the all-time single-season list.
"It's a great opportunity for me to come back to BG hockey and get to work with the student-athletes," said Masters. "I enjoyed my time playing here and love the game. I look forward to getting to work with the goaltenders and hopefully helping them advance their games to new levels. As a hopeful future sports psychologist then, this experience will definitely give me good first-hand knowledge and allow me to apply that knowledge with the athletes I'm working with."
Masters will look to play a key role in the development of new Falcon freshman goaltender Nick Eno, while trying to help BG returning goalies Jimmy Spratt and Phil Greer continue their advancements. Eno comes to BG after being taken in the seventh round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, while Spratt (3.64, .886/last season) returns for his junior season coming off a career-season that saw him earn the team's Most Improved Player honors as a sophomore. Greer then saw limited time for BG in his freshman season, but is a goalie the Falcons hope will continue to grow and develop.
Masters and his goaltending trio will kick-off their season with the annual "Falcon Kick-off" on Sat., Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. The event will feature an inner-squad game consisting of two 20-minute halves where there will be a fastest skater competition and a shootout at intermission. Fans will then be able to meet the team in the south end of the arena following the conclusion of the game.
