BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After posting one of the best weekends in goal since becoming a Falcon, junior Paul Shoemaker was rewarded by the Mid-American Conference as the men's soccer Player of the Week. The decision from the conference office was announced today, Monday, September 24.
In earning POW status, Shoemaker becomes the first BGSU goal keeper to have his performance recognized by the MAC since David DeGraff on October 13, 2003.
From November 10, 1997 through October 16, 2000 three of the four Falcon student-athletes that were named POW were goal keepers.
Two-time All-American Scott Vallow began the run on Nov. 10 and was followed by Academic All-American Ty Fowler (Sept. 7, 1999). Chris Dore, an All-American mid-fielder, broke the streak on October 18, 1999 prior to DeGraff earning the distinction in October of the 2000 season.
As a matter of fact, since Vallow's 1997 acknowledgment five of BGSU's eight players of the week have been goal keepers with DeGraff winning the award in 2000 and again in 2003.
On Thursday, September 20, Shoemaker anchored a young Bowling Green defense which held 19th ranked Ohio State, a team that entered the match averaging 19 shots per game, to a pair of shots in the first half and just 13 on the day. In doing so, the Falcons are one of three teams to control the OSU attack in the first 45:00 of play allowing five or less shots. Old Dominion gave up five shots on Sept. 7 while OSU got off four against West Virginia in the season opener on Aug. 31.
Additionally, the Buckeyes did not fire their first shot until the 24th minute of the match; the drought is believed to be the longest offensive hold over the nationally ranked squad to date.
Shoemaker ended the match with four saves, one in the first half and three in the second, and one goal against.
On Sunday, September 23, Shoemaker and the Falcon defense recorded their third shut-out of the season as Bowling Green State University beat the Wright State Raiders 2-0 at WSU's Alumni Field.
With the win, BGSU ends a win-less streak against the Raiders dating back to 1983. The Falcons are 3-4-2 all-time when competing with the Raiders and have shut out WSU each of their triumphant outings (1982, W 2-0; 1983, W 3-0; 2007, W 2-0).
Bowling Green is now 2-1 when Shoemaker does not have a stat recorded in the opening 45:00 of the match.
Shoemaker has four career shut outs in 3545:28 minutes in goal. He has a 2.00 career GAA and 1.05 GAA in 2007. He recorded six saves on the week.
The Falcons will open the conference season on Friday, September 28 when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face the Bulls of the University at Buffalo. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
