BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University football team moved to 3-1 on the season with a 41-21 win over Western Kentucky University Saturday night (Sept. 29). The Homecoming win came at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
Some notes and numbers from the game ...
* Saturday marked the first-ever meeting between the Falcons and WKU.
* The Falcons threw for over 300 yards as a team for the third time in four games this season (BG threw for 295 yards in the other game, at Michigan State) ... sophomore Tyler Sheehan completed 30 passes for the fourth consecutive game, going 31-for-42 for 270 yards through the air ... he had three touchdown passes and did not throw an interception.
* Anthony Glaud completed four of his eight pass attempts for 31 yards in the game.
* Sheehan was 8-for-9 for 78 yards on the Falcons' first two drives ... he capped the Falcons' first TD drive by taking the ball the final yard himself, a 1-yard run for his second rushing score of the season.
* P.J. Mahone had two interceptions as the Falcon defense picked off four passes on the night ... Mahone had his first pick of the game late in the first quarter, returning it 35 yards ... he returned his second INT 44 yards late in the first half ... he has returned his team-high three interceptions for a total of 122 yards (an average of 40.6 yards per pick) this season.
* Antonio Smith and Erique Dozier also had interceptions in the game ... Smith intercepted a pass in the end zone on the final play of the first half, while Dozier nearly took his fourth-quarter pick all the way back, grabbing a K.J. Black pass at the WKU 25-yard line and returning it to the two.
* The game marked the second time the Falcons have shut out an opponent in the first half ... BGSU led the Hilltoppers by a 17-0 count at the half ... the Falcons had held a 21-0 lead over Minnesota at halftime of the season opener.
* The Falcons forced four WKU turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble) in the opening half, giving BGSU a total of 13 turnovers forced in the first 14 quarters of the season ... the Brown and Orange would add one second-half takeaway on the Dozier INT.
* The fumble came on WKU's second drive of the game, with Jahmal Brown recording the second forced fumble of his career, and Smith making his fourth career recovery ... it was the eighth fumble forced by the BGSU defense in this year's four games, with the Falcons recovering six of them.
* Sheehan was a perfect 7-for-7 on the Falcons' opening drive of the second half, throwing for 62 yards and capping the drive with a three-yard scoring pass to Corey Partridge.
* Willie Geter and Chris Bullock each had solid games vs. the Hilltoppers ... Geter, a freshman, carried the ball five times for 38 yards, and had six receptions for 39 yards in the win ... Bullock ran the ball 11 times for 56 yards, and also had a catch for 11 yards ... Geter had entered the game with a total of 36 rushing yards on the season, while Bullock had had 70 yards rushing in the first three games of the year.
* Partridge led the Falcons with nine catches for 80 yards and a score, while Geter and Freddie Barnes each had six receptions in the game ... Partridge, Barnes and Marques Parks each had a TD catch.
* In addition to Sheehan's rushing score, Anthony Turner also had a TD run as well ... Turner lined up all over the field on Saturday night, seeing time at quarterback as well as lining up in the backfield or at receiver on occasion ... he had five carries for 16 yards and the TD.
* Nick Iovinelli averaged 41.5 yards on four punts in the game, with one of those punts being downed at the WKU 7-yard line.
* Sinisa Vrvilo connected on both of his field-goal tries, from 28 and 26 yards, respectively, and also was perfect on five point-after-touchdown attempts ... his two field goals give him a total of five (in seven attempts) on the year, topping the total (four) by the Falcons in all of the 2006 season.
* Chris Wright had a career-high three catches for 34 yards in the win.
* For their part, the Hilltoppers had a total of 311 yards rushing, with two individuals going over the 100-yard mark ... Tyrell Hayden had a game-high 121 yards on 18 rushes, while quarterback K.J. Black ran 14 times for 107 yards.
* Total offense ended up being almost even, with the Falcons holding a slim 425-413 advantage ... BGSU had the aforementioned 301 yards through the air, with 124 net rushing yards ... WKU ran for the 311 yards, and had 102 passing yards.
