Falcon volleyball heads west for the second weekend in a row. The Falcons will travel to the Comcast Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. BGSU will take on host University of New Mexico on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7:30 p.m. MST. Saturday (Sept. 8) they match up against Gonzaga University at 10:00 a.m. MST and University of Northern Colorado at 1:00 p.m. MST.
LOBO INVITATONAL MATCHUPS
Falcons vs. Lobos
The Orange and Brown match up against host New Mexico to open the Comcast Lobo Invitational. The Falcons will face the Lobos for the first time ever this weekend. The Lobos are 7-1 on the season and were undefeated until their loss to New Mexico State (1-3) on Tuesday (Sept. 4). While the Lobos were undefeated they won the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic and the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge.
Falcons vs. Bulldogs
The Falcons will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the second time in history. The Bulldogs are 5-3, on a three game winning streaking after beat Morgan State (3-0), Boise State (3-0), and Montana (3-0).
The first and only meeting between the Falcons and the Bulldog took place on Sept. 9, 1995, where the Falcons beat the Bulldogs on their home court, 3-0.
Falcons vs. Bears
BGSU volleyball is set to the finish up the tournament against University of Northern Colorado Bears. The Falcons are in search of their first win against the Bears as they lead the all-time series 2-0. The Bears are 2-5 for the season, after splitting 2-2 this weekend at the UNC Hampton Inn and Suites Classic beating Saint Francis (PA) (3-0) and UC Riverside (3-0), and losing to Florida Gulf Coast (1-3) and Iowa (1-3).
FALCONS DOMINATED THE SEAWOLVES, 3-1
The Falcons finished the Holiday Inn Buena Park Classic with a 2-1 record this weekend, after a decisive win over the Stony Brook University Seawolves, 30-19, 23-30, 30-23, 30-25.
BGSU volleyball came out firing and ready to go winning game one, 30-19. Game one was all Falcons as they hit a .471 with 18 kills and only two errors and held the Seawolves to .119 hitting percentage.
Game two slipped away from the Falcons as the lost, 23-30. The Falcons turned things around in game three and got back on track. The Falcons took a hold of the lead and didn't let it go all game. The Orange and Brown held the Seawolves to a .056 hitting percentage, their lowest in the match and won game three 30-23.
The Falcons finished game four 30-25 with the Falcon offense coming alive again hitting .375 with 18 kills.
Fish distributed the ball on offense for the Falcons finding all the right hitters collecting 42 assists and 10 digs, her second straight double-double for the weekend. The Falcons' offense was on fire with four hitters in double-digits. Stephanie Swiger and Madeline Means led the Falcon attack each putting away 12 kills. Means also picked up 15 digs recording her fourth double-double of the season. Also contributing to the Falcons' attack were Kendra Halm with 11 kills and Domek with 10 kills. Solid on the defense efforts for the Falcons was Chelsey Meek with 16 digs.
BGSU VOLLEYBALL BEAT UNDEFEATED PORTLAND STATE
In the first meeting between BGSU and Portland State, the Falcons were victorious pulling out a 3-2 (28-30, 23-30, 30-22, 30-22, 17-15) win over the Vikings and handing them their first loss of the 2007 season. The Vikings came into the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic undefeated, which they were able to continue with a win over Stony Brook Friday night (Aug. 31). However they were unable to keep their winning streak going after they met the Falcons on the court Saturday (Sept. 1).
The match between the Falcons and the Vikings was an all out battle lasting two hours and thirty six minutes. The Falcons dropped the first two games of the match to the Vikings, 30-28 and 30-23.
The Vikings came out fired up in game three taking the lead, but the Falcons were relentless as they continued to chip away at the Viking lead and came back to win game three, 30-22.
The Orange and Brown captured the lead in game four after the third point, which they didn't relinquish the rest of the game. The Falcons won game four, 30-22. The Falcons were consistent in game four holding the Vikings to .104 hitting percentage, which was their lowest in the match.
With the match two games to two games, it was an all out battle in game five with the Falcons victorious over the Vikings, 17-15.
The Falcon offense was firing on all cylinders with four players in double digits in kills. Swiger led the way with 14 kills for the match, Means followed up with 13 kills and 15 digs getting her third double-double of the season. Domek and Halm each added 12 kills a piece. Fish ran the offense for the Falcons recording a career high 49 assists and 12 digs, picking up her first collegiate double-double. Chelsey Meek led the defensive stop with 28 digs along with Maggie Karges' 10 digs.
FALCONS FALL TO THE TITANS, 3-0
The Falcons opened the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic Friday (Aug. 31) night. The Falcons fought hard but lost to Cal State Fullerton, 27-30, 30-32, 25-30.
The Falcons offense was led by Means with 10 kills and Jackson adding nine. Mohr ran the offense collecting 29 assists and Meek led the defense with 23 digs.
ALL-TOURNAMENT FALCONS
Freshman Sam Fish and junior Chelsey Meek were named to the All-Tournament team after both having a solid weekend of play at the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic.
Fish finished the weekend with 95 assists averaging 9.50 a game, 24 digs, 11 kills, and seven service aces. Fish also recorded two double-doubles this weekend in each of their victories.
Meek recorded 67 digs averaging 5.58 a game, eight assists, four service aces, and one kill this weekend. Meek has recorded 1156 career digs, which is sixth in BGSU records and holds the BGSU record for 537 digs in a season and the record for 5.21 digs per game.
FISH REELS IN TOP PERFORMANCE
Freshman Sam Fish reels in a top performance this weekend at Holiday Inn Buena Park Classic. Fish took charge of the Falcon offense in their victories against Portland State and Stony Brook University. Fish recorded a career high 49 assists and 12 digs against Portland State, picking up her first collegiate double-double. Fish put together another solid performance against Stony Brook collecting 42 assists and 10 digs, recording her second straight double-double.
MEANS KEEPS DOUBLING-UP
Senior Madeline Means of Caledonia, Michigan continues her solid all-round play recording her third and fourth double-double this weekend in the Falcon's victories.
Means recorded 15 digs and 13 kills against Portland State and 15 digs and 12 kills against Stony Brook.
On the year Means has 72 kills averaging 2.77 kills a game and 84 digs averaging 3.23 digs a game.
RETURN OF THE FALCONS
The Falcons will return to Bowling Green after a two week stint on the road and will host the Best Western Invitational on Sept. 14-15. The four team tournament includes DePaul University, Duquesne University, and Valparaiso University.
