KENT, Ohio - Host Kent State University broke out to an early lead, scoring the game's first 12 points en route to a 63-49 win over the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team Saturday night (Jan. 12). The Mid-American Conference game was held at the M.A.C. Center.
With the win, the Golden Flashes improve to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 6-8 and 1-1, respectively.
Junior Nate Miller led the Falcons with 17 points, making 7-of-11 shots from the field. Classmate Darryl Clements also was in double figures, with 11 points.
Chris Singletary led the Flashes with 20 points, while Mike Scott had 14.
After KSU took that 12-0 lead, the Falcons battled back to within 16-12 midway through the first half. But, the Flashes then would score the next 10 points, and BG could get no closer than eight points the rest of the night.
The hosts scored on their first three shots of the night to take a quick 6-0 lead, and Singletary's layup at the 16:08 mark ended the game-opening 12-0 run. A Clements shot fake and short jumper put the Falcons on the board.
Miller hit a straightaway three-pointer at 13:36, then scored on a transition layup a minute later, cutting the home team's lead to 14-7 and prompting a KSU timeout.
After KSU answered with a basket, sophomore Marc Larson saved the ball from going out of bounds, dishing it to junior Brian Moten. Moten's right-side three-pointer found nothing but net, and the Falcons' deficit was 16-10 at the 11-minute mark.
When Miller hit a baseline driving layup, the visitors were within four points, but two free throws by both Scott and Al Fisher began the 10-0 run that extended KSU's lead to 26-12. Clements' layup at the 3:39 mark ended a scoreless streak of nearly seven minutes for the Brown and Orange.
That was the first of three baskets for Clements over the remainder of the first half. Clements scored six of BGSU's final eight points, the last a jumper with just two seconds left before halftime. KSU took a 30-20 lead into the lockerroom.
Back-to-back hoops by Miller cut the Flashes lead to eight points, 32-24, early in the second half. The first was a layup that came after a Clements steal and some tic-tac-toe passing from Clements to redshirt freshman Chris Knight to Miller. The second was a floater in traffic through the lane.
Layups by Mike McKee and Singletary put the Flashes' lead back into double digits, before Larson scored the game's next three points, all at the free-throw line.
But, Scott tipped in his own miss, and a Rodriquez Sherman layup increased the lead to 40-27 as the pace of the game picked up. The Falcons quickly responded when a long pass by Miller led to a Moten layup, and a Knight layup off an assist by sophomore Otis Polk made the score 41-31, KSU, with 14:44 remaining.
Polk swatted away back-to-back shot attempts by Kent's Brandon Parks several minutes later, then got an offensive rebound and hit a layup on the ensuing possession, keeping KSU's lead at 10 points (47-37) midway through the half. After neither team could score for the next two minutes, Polk split a pair of free throws to cut the lead into single digits.
But, the home team would score the next 10 points, with the last six coming from Singletary. He converted a three-point play at 5:33, then hit a long-range three-pointer less than a minute later. KSU's lead was 19 points, at 57-38.
Miller answered with a three-pointer of his own, off a Polk kickout, as BG attempted to chip away at the lead. But, the Falcons could not get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
The Golden Flashes shot 43.9 percent from the field to the Falcons 42.2%. BGSU shot an even 50 percent in the second half. The hosts held a 36-29 rebounding advantage, and had a 17-9 margin in points off turnovers.
Fisher had eight points and Haminn Quaintance six for the Flashes. Scott had a double-double, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 14 points, while Singletary added five steals and Fisher four.
Moten had seven points and Knight six for the Falcons. Polk had a team-high seven boards and a career-high four blocked shots in the game. Knight had six rebounds and a career-high three rejections for the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons return home to prepare for a Thursday (Jan. 17) game vs. Buffalo. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
