Keeping the Eagles on the Ground
Saturday's meet will be the first for EMU this season. They return 10 lettewinners from last year's championship team. Returning will be Duyen Zu Vuong who was an alternate for last year's NCAA Regional Championship competition. She was also voted as freshman of the year last season. Assisting her will be Tawna Bennett, who was the 2005 MAC specialist of the year.
These two squads met twice last year, with the Eagles getting the best of the Falcons both times. The first was the season opener for the Orange and Brown where they were downed 192.475-188.925. This score was the lowest on the season for the Falcons. They met again at Missouri where again Eastern Michigan walked away with a win, 191.775-190.650. Overall EMU edges BGSU 17-16.
Looking to Only go Up
Last week the Falcons opened their season up by hosting #12 Missouri. The Tigers showed why they were ranked by picking up a strong 194.100-188.825 victory. There were many strong points in the loss for the Falcons to build upon.
Youth Grows Up
With one meet under their belts the nine new faces of the Falcons know what to expect in a BGSU meet. Sophomore transfer Breanne Guy stepped up early and showed she would be a leader by finishing third in the all-around with a score of 38.450. Her best performances came on the vault and floor. On both events she finished fourth with a score of 9.825. Another early leader was freshman Meg Satterlee. She posted a 9.750 on vault and a 9.825 on floor.
Seniors Pick up Right Where they Left off
Seniors Jacquelyn Bernhardt and Jholeen Ponce both posted strong scores for the Orange and Brown in the loss to Missouri. Bernhardt participated in one event, vault. She nailed a big routine placing her tied for second with a score of 9.850. Ponce, like Bernhardt competed in one event, beam. She finished tied for fourth with a 9.675.
Staying Strong in the MAC
After one weekend of meets underway the Falcons look to be very competitive in the MAC. Guy's score of 38.450 has her in second in MAC all-around scores this season. On vault Bernhardt has the highest score, followed by Guy, while Satterlee currently sits in eighth place. On bars freshman Michelle Lichini has BGSU's best score of 9.550, good enough for 13th place. Ponce sits in fourth place on beam followed by Guy in 14th. Guy, Satterlee, and sophomore Morgan Balzer hold first through third on the floor.
Overall the Falcons posted the third best team score behind Western Michigan. Their team vault score was the highest in the MAC.
Hitting the Road
After the meet against EMU the Orange and Brown will head to the road for a three-meet stand.
