Providence, RHODE ISLAND - On Saturday the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team took first out of five teams at Brown University. BGSU recorded their second highest team score on the season with a 191.475. Following them was Bridgeport (188.675), Brown (185.825), MIT (180.600) and West Chester (174.225). The Falcons were led for the third straight week in a row by sophomore Breanne Guy who won the all-around with a score of 38.475, a season high.
Head coach Kerrie Beach was very pleased with how her team carried out their team goal of hitting 20 routines, "We had a great overall meet. We had a goal going into this meet that we wanted to hit 20 out of 24 routines. While the scores are out of our control, we had a goal and we met that tonight."
The Falcons improved greatly on two events, the beam and floor. On beam the team was led by freshman Meg Satterlee who placed second when she scored a season best, 9.725. The rest of the team followed her, as sophomore Morgan Balzer took fifth with a score 9.575. Junior Katie Follett and Guy placed tied for sixth with their scores of 9.550. As a team they posted a season high 47.900.
"Meg (Satterlee) had a great night for us" commented Beach. "She finally hit on all three events, which we have been really looking forward to seeing. It is also very nice to see a freshman put everything all together."
On the floor the team also set a new season high of 48.000. Queenita Gamble showed sophomore leadership when she led her team with a 9.675 placing her in second. She was followed by senior Jacque Bernhardt who trailed in sixth with her 9.625. Guy held down seventh, while Satterlee placed tied for tenth with a 5.575.
While there was not an increase in the teams overall score on vault the Falcons can be very happy with their performances as they took the top three spots. Guy won the event with a 9.825, tying her season high. Bernhardt and Balzer took second and third with scores of 9.775 and 9.600 respectively giving Balzer a new season high.
"Today was Morgan Balzer's birthday and she had a great meet," Beach said. "She and Breanne Guy both put up great routines and excellent scores in the all-around."
Like last week the Orange and Brown were led by freshman Michelle Luchini on bars. She finished in third flipping to a 9.575. Guy and freshman Lexi Psichopaidas took sixth and seventh respectively with scores of 9.500 and 9.475.
Beach was very pleased with how her team handled their first road competition. "Going into tonight's meet I was concerned with how our team would handle competing on the road and in an afternoon meet. I was very impressed with how we mentally came out ready to compete and staid focused. The team gave a huge effort on every event. The whole team came together and supported each other through each routine, which was exciting to see."
With this win the Falcons are now 5-1 on the season with the All-Ohio coming this week. The meet will be on Sunday (Feb. 3) at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of Kent State. After this meet the team will have a short week as they head to Muncie, Indian for a Mid-American Conference meet against Ball State. That meet will be on Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m.
"Tonight's win was a huge confidence builder for our team," Beach said. "Each week we are getting stronger and continuing to build momentum. That is what we are going to hope to do next week is just continue to build momentum for our team."
