`BOWLING' Green's Other Meaning ...
In the six years in which the BGSU football team has reached a post-season bowl game during the women's basketball program existence, the basketball Falcons are 5-1 when playing before or on the same day as those on the gridiron ... beginning in 1982 when the football squad lost in the California Raisin Bowl and continuing through to their 1992 Las Vegas Bowl win, the basketball Falcons won four straight games with the first three being played on the same day as the bowl... in 1992 the wbb Falcons beat Dayton on the road (94-68) on Dec. 12 while the football Falcons had to wait six days before beating Nevada by a point (35-34) at the Las Vegas Bowl ... BGSU's 28-24 win over Northwestern at the Motor City Bowl (Dec. 26, 2003) is the only occasion in which both teams did not record victories ... IUPUI beat the women's basketball team 89-74 on Dec. 22, 2003 on the road ... in 2004 the teams bounced back to their winning ways when the women first beat Robert Morris on the road, 66-51, on Dec. 20 while the football team beat Memphis 52-35 in the GMAC Bowl ... with the 1-0 GMAC record, the football team will return to Ladd Peebles Stadium on Jan. 6; kick-off will be held 31-and-a-half hours after Chicago State tips-off against the Falcon women ... the basketball Falcons have scored no less than 62 points in those games and averages 75.8 ppg.
History in the Making
With Sunday's (Dec. 30) win over the University of Tennessee-Martin BGSU head coach Curt Miller (2001-pres; 134-63) is one victory shy of tying Jaci Clark's (1991-98; 135-65) record of 135 wins in seven years with the Falcons ... if Miller and Co. beat Chicago State on Saturday, he will not only tie Clark, but he will also have 16 remaining games on the regular season schedule to earn the 10 needed wins to surpass Fran Voll (1984-91; 144-60) as the winningest coach in BGSU wbb history ... to say he is in good company is an understatement ... as head coach Voll posted four 20+ win seasons, four MAC Tournament titles and three regular-season league championships ... in 1989 Voll's Falcons won BGSU's first ever NCAA Tournament game, a 69-59 decision over the Cincinnati Bearcats in Anderson Arena ... Clark, an assistant under Voll, also boasts four 20+ win seasons on her seven-year resume with her alma mater ... in consecutive seasons her squads won both the MAC regular-season and tournament championships while making appearances in the NCAA tournament ... she also led one team to the WNIT in her final season with the Orange and Brown ... currently, Miller's .680 win percentage is the second best in BGSU basketball history when comparing both the men's and women's programs ... Voll (wbb, .706) is the leader followed by Miller (wbb; .680), Clark (wbb; .675), Harold Anderson (mbb, 1942-63, .655, 367-193) and Jim Larranaga (mbb, 1986-1997, .541, 170-144) ... most will remember Larranaga's recent success with the George Mason Patriot's as they advanced to the 2006 men's Final Four ... he is the only coach on the aforementioned roster to advance further in the NCAA tournament than Miller, but obviously did not do it with a BGSU squad ... when comparing Miller with his MAC peers, the HC's 134 wins rank as the 10th highest total in the league's history ... he is one of five active head coaches on the top ten list and has been in leadership his position for the shortest period of time by a minimum of two seasons ... Miami's Maria Fantananrosa, the next closest coach to compare to Miller's experience, has two-seasons of seniority over Miller in the league.
This Is the Life of the Go-Getter's ...
In their month long hiatus between home games the Falcons have covered an estimated 3,238-plus roundtrip miles both in the air and on the ground ... after traveling nearly 562 miles to-and-from Bloomington, Ind. (University of Indiana), BGSU was in town for a little over 24-hours before embarking on a five-day trip to the states of Maryland and Delaware (roughly 1,273 roundtrip miles) ... despite losing at IU, the Falcons picked-up a pair of wins versus Mount St. Mary's (Emmitsburg, Md.) and the University of Delaware (Newark, Del.) on that trip to the East Coast ... five days of a much-needed Christmas Break interrupted the BGSU travel plans before they returned to the road for another business week on the road ... Dec. 27 the second long December trip for the Orange and Brown, this time encompassing roughly 1,403 miles to-and-from Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Cyclone Shootout ... BGSU was 2-1 at the shootout beating Hampton University and the University of Tennessee-Martin after losing to the hosts on the opening day ... between Dec. 15 and Dec. 31 the Falcons were on the road for 12 days ... in just under two weeks, as a team BG spent time in seven states (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan [Detroit Airport], Maryland, Pennsylvania [hotel stay for Maryland trip], Delaware and Iowa) and awoke in five different cities ... distance estimates calculated with the services of airtimetable.com and mapquest.com ... both travel and game days were counted in total road-trip days.
Miscellaneous Non-Conference Road Stats
In what some have described as a "grueling" and "chaotic" non-conference season BGSU pulled out a 6-2 record through the eight-road games on their schedule ... the Falcons were 4-1 in tournament play capturing the championship trophy at the Cornell Classic while bringing home runner-up status at the Iowa State Cyclone Shootout ... both Kate Achter and Lauren Prochaska were recognized on the all-tournament teams in both locations ... it is estimated the Falcons covered at least 6,247 roundtrip miles since first taking the road on Nov. 14 when BG departed for Nashville, Tenn. ... they were also away from the BGSU campus for 21 days en route to visiting nine states ... roughly nine movies were calculated to provide entertainment while one bus safety video was repeated on numerous occasions ... the record for shortest time in a restaurant for a pre-game meal was set in Ithaca, NY at 36-minutes beating last season's record of 48-minutes ... special thanks to Monique Rosati and Heather Grine for keeping meal stats throughout the season.
Closing 2007 With a BANG!
Of the 73 DI women's basketball games that were played on Dec. 30, 2007 Bowling Green's 42 point win over the University of Tennessee-Martin (78-36) ranked as one of the best wins in the nation ... six program's, including BGSU, beat their opponent by more than 40-points that day ... three were ranked in the Top 15 ... St. John's outscored visiting Morgan State, 97-56, by 41 ... eight other squads won by 30-plus points ... UTM's 36 allotted points was the third lowest of the day and tied for second-lowest in the MAC this season ... at the half, BGSU was up 40-14 over UTM ... Wake Forest gave up a national low 12-points in the first-half to Longwood for the eventual 31 point win, while No. 2 Stanford was up 32-12 at the half over Washington ... Pitt allowed Wagner just 14 in their first-half of play ... No. 6 Rutgers also matched the Falcons defensive prowess allowing Temple to score only 14-points prior to intermission ... the 42-point win was the second best in the MAC this season ... Eastern Michigan's 108-22 stomping over Temple Baptist (+ 86) ranks as the top win in the MAC in 2007-08 thus far.
More Information on the UT-Martin Win
BGSU is the only MAC team to not allow their opponent to attempt a free throw in 40-miuntes of play this season ... the Falcons are the second squad to hold the opposition without a point from the free throw line in 2007-08 - Temple Baptist did not convert a single FT against EMU earlier this season ... UT-Martin's two made three-point field-goals are the second lowest output from behind the arc against the current Falcon team - Delaware's one made trey is the lowest to date ... the Skyhawks 21 rebounds against the Falcons ties Florida Gulf Coast for the least in a single-game this season ... their seven assists are second only to Delaware's five.
Is There Anything You Can't Do? Is There Anywhere You Don't Succeed?
Not only did the Falcons rack-up a 10-3 record in the first semester of play, as a team, the Orange and Brown brought in a team term GPA of 3.23 ... cumulatively the squad has a 3.40 GPA ... ten of the 14 members on the roster buckled down in the classroom to earn a 3.00 or higher GPA for the Fall 2007 semester ... three of those ten student-athletes earned a 3.85 or better last semester ... junior Education major Lindsey Goldsberry was named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week earlier in the season ... on a related note, the Falcons have a 100% graduation rate in the Curt Miller era of those athletes who have exhausted their eligibility with the team.
Falcon Arithmetic: (Road Losses < Road Wins) / Time Away From Arena
In their month away from the city of Bowling Green, Ohio, the Falcons were 4-2 keeping the tradition of the multiple-week, multiple-win six-game road-stand ... including the December 2007 totals, BGSU is 17-7 and has never lost more than two games under similar circumstances ... in its first happening, the 1981-82 Falcons went 5-1 over the span of 19 days between home games on Nov. 24 and Dec. 14 ... in head coach Curt Miller's second season at BGSU, the Falcons posted a 4-2 record during a 25 day travel session - Dec. 4 and Dec. 30, 2002 ... in Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor's freshman season, BG went 4-2 between home games on Nov. 30 and Dec. 30, 2004 (29 days) ... after their Dec. 5 OT loss at home at the hands of Notre Dame and their loss to Indiana at Assembly Hall, the Falcons fought back to record a pair of wins at Mount St. Mary's (62-59) and Delaware (64-54) before Christmas ... the Falcons fell at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa but rebounded with a pair of wins on consecutive days to finalize their record of 4-2 in the month away from home.
