FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the first time in his young career, Bowling Green State University freshman forward Jacob Cepis has earned a Central Collegiate Hockey Association honor as he was named Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (Jan. 7). Cepis, a native of Parma, Ohio, tallied a game-high two goals this past Friday in helping the Falcons to a 4-2 win over Miami, while he added a helper on Saturday in helping BG to a home weekend split against the nation's top team.
The freshman forward currently ranks third on the team in scoring with 17 points as his nine goals rank second only to senior tri-captain Derek Whitmore, who has 13. In his last seven games, Cepis has tallied six goals and two assists as he has helped the Falcon freshmen account for 12 of the team's last 15 goals and 14 of their last 22.
In Friday's contest, Cepis tallied two first period goals to give the Falcons an early 2-1 lead, which they'd ride to a 4-2 victory as they became the first team this season to tally four goals against the nation's top scoring defense. The win gave the Falcons their first-known victory over the nation's No. 1 team in 14 years, while they also stopped a seven-game winning-streak that the RedHawks had enjoyed in the series.
On Saturday, Cepis tallied an assist on Mike Nesdill's goal in the first period, helping BG come back from a 2-0 first period deficit to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period. That was before MU scored three unanswered goals in the second and third period to steal a 5-2 win.
Despite the setback though, the win on Friday helped BG move up to a sixth-place tie in the league standings as they sit at 9-9-0 overall with a CCHA mark of 6-6-0.
The Falcons will hope to ride the momentum from this past weekend's success when they head to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. this upcoming weekend to take on the Lakers of Lake Superior State. The first puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday, before the two squads conclude their two-game set with a 5:05 p.m. face-off on Saturday.
