
Falcons Bounce Back with a Sweep Over the Eagles

YPSILANTI, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team bounced back with a three game sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) over the Eastern Michigan Eagles this evening (Oct. 17). The Falcons over powered the Eagles as they out hit them posting 40 kills and a .235 hitting percentage compared the Eastern Michigan's 32 kills and .106 hitting percentage.
Once the Falcons got started in the first set there was no stopping. The Falcons put together three straight points to take a 4-3 lead. The set remained close but 11 straight unanswered points by the Falcons, which even two Eagle timeouts couldn't stop gave BG a 10 point lead over Eastern Michigan, 17-7. The Falcon run was started off of a kill from Kaitlin Jackson and included four blocks from Kendra Halm with two block assists from Sam Fish, two service aces from Meghan Mohr, two kills from Jackson and a kill from Fish. The Eagles didn't give up and put together a late four-point run to cut the Falcons' lead to five, 20-15 but a kill from Shari Luther ended the run and sided-out for BG. The Falcons finished off the Eagles in the first set with a kill from Halm, 25-19. The Falcons dominated the net in the first set terminating 12 kills and posting a .280 hitting percentage with six blocks compared the Eagles nine kills and a mere .032 hitting percentage.
The Falcons took their momentum from the first set to help them take an early, 7-3 lead in the second set after six straight points, including back-to-back kills from Halm and consecutive solo blocks from Jackson. The Falcons held their lead over the Eagles, which they extended to seven after a four-point run sparked by a kill from Jackson. The set continued to go back and forth with the Falcons in the lead. A kill from Mohr secured set point for the Falcons. Jackson then terminated play for the point and set to give the Falcons another 25-19 win. The Falcons once again out hit the Eagles terminating 15 kills good for a .211 hitting percentage compared to the Eagles nine kills and .062 hitting percentage.
With the Falcons up, 2-0 in the match the Eagles came out firing taking an early 12-7 lead over the Falcons after two four-point runs. The Eagles then put up another four point run to extend their lead to seven over the Falcons, 17-10. A kill from Mohr stopped the Eagles and turned the tables with the Falcons going on a seven-point run to tie the set up 17-17. The Falcons continued to score points in a row securing set point off of a kill from Corey Domek winning the third set, 25-21. The Falcons stayed aggressive late in the third set scoring 14 of the last 20 points of the set.
The Falcon offensive attack was spread out with three players just shy of double-digit kill performances. Leading the way for the Orange and Brown on offense were Halm and Jackson each terminating a team high nine kills. Both Halm and Jackson were nearly error free on the night as Halm posted a .471 hitting percentage with her nine kills coming in 17 attempts and only one error, while Jackson posted a .304 hitting percentage with her nine kills coming in 23 attempts and only two errors. Mohr was right behind Halm and Jackson with eight kills. Fish ran the offense for the Falcons collecting 33 assists.
The Falcons had two players in double-digits on defense as Chelsey Meek led the team with 15 digs, while Susie Isphording posted 10 digs on the night. The Falcon defense at the net also posted big numbers with Halm leading the team with six blocks. Jackson and Fish both recorded four blocks against the Eagles.
The Falcons will return to action as they wrap-up their five match road trip with a mid-week against Cleveland State on Tuesday (Oct. 12). The Falcons will then finally return home to Anderson Arena for a four match home stand starting with hosting Head Coach Denise Van De Walle's alma mater, Ball State on Friday (Oct. 24) at 7:00 p.m. and arch-rival Toledo on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 3:00 p.m.
