BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University's men's soccer family has come together to honor a former Falcon playing and coaching great. The Gary Palmisano Soccer Endowment will be formally announced at halftime of Saturday's (Nov. 1) Falcon men's soccer game vs. Buffalo.
The game begins at 11:00 a.m. at Cochrane Field.
Palmisano was a standout goalkeeper for coach Mickey Cochrane, helping lead the Falcons to NCAA bids in both 1972 and 1973. He later served as assistant coach under Cochrane before taking the reins in 1978.
In his 16 seasons, Palmisano had a head-coaching record of 172-97-25, and his 1992 team was 15-2-1 and was ranked as high as third in the country before finishing ninth. He earned numerous coaching awards, and was a driving force behind soccer being recognized as a MAC sport in 1993.
This summer, many former soccer players made gifts to complete the endowment for the Gary Palmisano Soccer Endowment. Currently, the endowment, which will provide a scholarship for a men's soccer player, sits at $13,000. The first scholarship in Gary's name is set to be awarded in the Fall of 2009.
A special thank you must go to Falcon alumni Bob Gofus and David Michels for their work with athletics development on this program. Palmisano's daughter, Caroline, who currently attends BGSU, is scheduled to be on hand for Saturday's announcement, and a number of BGSU men's soccer alumni are also scheduled to be in attendance.
