NOTRE DAME, IND. - The Bowling Green State University hockey team could not recover from three unanswered goals by Notre Dame in the second period as the Fighting Irish skated to a 5-1 victory at the Joyce Center Friday night.
After Notre Dame had put two tallies on the board in the first period, including a goal with just 54 seconds left in the opening stanza, Bowling Green seemed to get some of the momentum back as senior Brandon Svendsen scored the fourth short-handed goal for the Falcons this season at the 5:03 mark of the second period to cut the deficit in half. Linemate David Solway won a battle along the boards and sent Svendsen in all alone on Notre Dame goaltender Jordan Pearce to get the Falcons on the board.
But, the first of the three unanswered goals by Notre Dame came just 1:06 after the Falcons scored. Notre Dame freshman Billy Maday's shot from the left point found the back of the net and any momentum the Falcons had was gone.
Notre Dame added goals at 17:49 and 19:59 of the second period to make it the final score as neither team scored in the final stanza.
For the first time this season the Falcons were outshot, 32-28, with BG senior goalie Jimmy Spratt credited with 27 saves while Pearce made 27 saves. BG was 0-for-7 on the power-play while Notre Dame, ranked fifth or sixth in the country depending on the poll, was 2-for-6 with the man-advantage.
With the win, Notre Dame improves to 8-3-1 overall and 4-2-1-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Falcons had their three-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 5-6-2 overall and 4-4-1-0 in conference play.
The Falcons will look to gain a split in the series at home Saturday as the two teams meet in a 7:05 p.m. in the Ice Arena.
"They were clearly better through the three positions, goalie, defense and forwards," BGSU head coach Scott Paluch said. "They were better on special teams, and they came out with a lot more loose pucks. It's a pretty simple game to analyze from that point."
