BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Kim Wilburn's steal and layup with 6.1 seconds left gave the OGBR Legends a 68-66 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon/evening (Nov. 8). The exhibition game was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
A pair of sophomores led the Falcons in scoring, as Tracy Pontius had 18 points to lead all players, while Lauren Prochaska added 16. Junior Niki McCoy had 10 points to round out BG's double-digit scorers.
The Legends, a team consisting of several players with WNBA experience, had four players in double digits. Erica Glover led the way with 17 points, while Courtney Coleman had a double-double, with 13 points and a game-high 10 boards. Coleman also led all players with five assists.
Amanda Lassiter added 12 points and Wilburn 10 for the visitors.
Wilburn's layup capped a game-ending 9-0 run for the Legends, who had trailed by seven points with 1:31 remaining. After Wilburn's decisive shot, Pontius drove the length of the court and got off a layup try in traffic. The ball bounced on the iron before falling off as the horn sounded, and the Legends had the win.
Wilburn scored six of the nine points in that final run. She knocked down a jumper just four seconds after McCoy had given BG a 66-59 lead with two free throws.
After a BG turnover, Lassiter hit a three-point field goal with 1:06 to go. The home team missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 46.4 seconds left, and Wilburn grabbed a Glover miss and was fouled with 20.3 seconds remaining. She made both of her free-throw tries to tie the game.
The Falcons got the ball over midcourt and called a timeout with 15.8 seconds left, before Wilburn's game-winning play. Wilburn was one of five former Ohio State Buckeyes to see action for the Legends. The team's rotation on Saturday included two Missouri products and one each from Purdue, Massachusetts and Akron.
In addition to her 16 points, Prochaska had a team-high nine rebounds for the Falcons. Sophomore Jen Uhl had eight points and five boards off the bench, while junior Tara Breske scored six points. Senior Lindsey Goldsberry and soph Chelsea Albert rounded out the Falcons' scorers with four points apiece.
The Falcons had a 6-0 run to take a 12-5 lead early in the game, and a Pontius three-pointer gave the Brown and Orange a 16-8 lead with 12:52 left in the opening half. Layups by Goldsberry and Prochaska put the Falcons' advantage into double digits for the first time, at 22-11.
Glover's layup closed a 6-0 run that brought the Legends back to within six points, 24-18, with 2:47 left in the half. The teams traded points over the remainder of the period, with Uhl's late bucket giving BG a 30-22 lead at the break.
The Legends scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to tie the game at 32-all. Glover and Coleman combined for all 10 of those points, with Glover's jumper tying the game.
On BG's next possession, Goldsberry missed a three-point try. But, just after Larecha Jones grabbed the rebound, Goldsberry ripped the ball from her clutches and fed Pontius for a triple and a 35-32 Falcon lead.
Pontius then fed Uhl for a baby hook, and Goldsberry grabbed a defensive rebound and fired the ball downcourt to Albert for a layup. The Falcons led by seven points as the Legends took a timeout with just under 14 minutes left.
Uhl and Albert connected on back-to-back baskets, with Uhl's right-side entry pass finding Albert for a reverse layup, and Albert returning the favor by hitting a cutting Uhl for a layup and a 45-34 BG lead.
Then, however, the Legends would score eight-straight points to get within three points midway through the half. After a Pontius layup, though, McCoy spotted Prochaska for a three-pointer that gave the Falcons a 50-42 advantage.
Again, the visitors responded. scoring eight consecutive points after a Pontius jumper to get within a single point, 52-51, with 6:49 remaining. Several minutes later, a Pontius three-point play put the home team ahead, 57-53.
Glover slipped inside for a reverse layup, but McCoy's driving layup restored the four-point margin with under five minutes left, and another Prochaska triple from in front of her team's bench gave BG a 62-55 edge.
Coleman cut into that margin with a three-point play, but Uhl hit a turnaround one-hander in the lane for a 64-58 Falcon lead with 2:47 left. Coleman split a pair of free throws, and both teams then went scoreless for the next 67 seconds. McCoy's two charity tosses with 1:31 left proved to be BG's final points before the Legends' game-ending run.
The Falcons will begin the regular season with a pair of road games, beginning with Friday's (Nov. 14) season opener at Temple. After a game at Valparaiso on Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Falcons open the home portion of the regular-season slate against Lipscomb on Saturday, Nov. 22.
