BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Falcon fans got their first look at the 2009 Bowling Green State University gymnastics team as they held their annual intra-squad Orange and Brown meet this evening (Dec. 12). While both teams had great performances in tonights meet the Orange team finished in top with a score of 151.900 while the Brown team finished with a score of 151.150. The team scores were based on the top four performances on each event for each team.
"I am pleased with the team's performance, especially this early in the year," said head coach Kerrie Beach. "It is clear that our routines are ready for competition. We will be focusing on the details from this point on to prepare for our first meet at Northern Illinois University."
The leadership and experience from the Falcon veterans shined as multiple upper classmen recorded team and event highs. The Falcons returned 16 members of the 2008 team, including three seniors Katie Follett, Jholeen Ponce and Jenna Wirtanen along with 2008 regional championship competitor junior Breanne Guy. Three of the Falcon newcomers Dawn Christman, Andrea Kinzer and Stacy Kramer made their debut for the Orange and Brown, recording top scores in multiple events showing the promise and talent of the young Falcons.
The Falcons started off on the night with the vault as Wirtanen posted the best score for the Falcons with a 9.750 to lead the Brown team to a team score of 38.450 with the Orange team finishing with a 37.350. Right behind Wirtanen was Kinzer with 9.700, the second best score overall and for the Brown team. Leading the Orange team and recording the third best score on the vault was Christman with a 9.650.
"Jenna Wirtanen really proved that she is ready to upgrade her vault her senior year," said Beach. "This is a huge accomplishment and it showed with her 9.75 score. I was also impressed with freshman, Andrea Kinzer. She is really going to make a difference in our vault line up."
Next up for the Falcons were the uneven bars as the Orange team finished on top with a team score of 38.200 while the Brown finished with a team score of 37.300. Guy led all Falcons and the Orange team with a 9.700, while fellow Orange teammate Megan Chronister picked up the second best score on bars with a 9.600. Rounding out the top three on the bars were the Orange's Ponce and the Brown's Amber Brewer each with a score of 9.500.
"Breanne Guy nailed her routine for a 9.7," stated Beach. "She has added new elements this year that are really going to help our bar line-up and her all-around score. We are pleased to have Amber Brewer back from ACL repair as well . Her bar routine was solid even without her competitive dismount, which we will be adding in the upcoming weeks."
With both the Orange and Brown team each winning one event the Falcons moved on to the balance beam. The Orange team took their second straight event with a team score of 38.700 and every gymnast finishing with a 9.600 or better. Leading the Brown team to a team score of 37.500 was red-shirt freshman Kasey Fillmore recording the best score of the night with a 9.750. In a three way tie for the number two spot on the beam were Orange teammates Abby Ashley, Chronister and Guy all recording a 9.700. The Orange team also took home the number three spot on beam as Christman scored a 9.650.
"Beam was a highlight for us," said Beach. "We had only one fall out of ten competitors. Sophomore Kasey Fillmore really hit her routine and scored a 9.75. Team Orange all scored 9.6 or better. It is clear that beam should be a positive for us this season."
The Falcons finished up the night with the floor exercise as the Brown team scored a team total of 27.900 to edge out the Orange team with a team score of 37.650. Leading the Orange team and recording the best score on the floor was Guy with a 9.800. Wirtanen once again led the Brown team posting a 9.650 score on floor taking the second spot. Following up right behind her were Brown teammates Kinzer and Fillmore as they tied for the third spot with a 9.600 on floor.
"Junior Breanne Guy achieved the highest score of the evening with a 9.8 on floor," said Beach. "I was also pleased with Kasey Fillmore's routine and Andrea Kinzer's performance."
Although each team took home two events the Orange team finished on top as their total team score was a 151.900 while the Brown team recorded a team score of 151.150.
Head coach Kerrie Beach and the Falcons will officially open the 2009 season on the road after the new year against Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois on Sunday (Jan. 11) at 2:00 p.m. The Falcons will then return home for their home opening meet against Ball State on Sunday (Jan. 18) at 2:00 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
