CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University men's basketball sophomore Joe Jakubowski has been named the Mid-American Conference's Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 18). Jakubowski earns the honor for the first time in his Falcon career.
Jakubowski, a native of Rossford, Ohio (Toledo St. John's), came close to a triple-double, with 13 points and game-high totals of nine rebounds and seven assists as the Falcons defeated Detroit, 58-38, in the team's only game last week.
Jakubowski was 4-for-6 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, adding a steal in 34 minutes of action. The game marked the first time a BGSU team had held an opponent to fewer than 40 points in over four decades (since Feb. 1, 1964). BGSU held the Titans to 13 first-half points, holding UDM without a point for a stretch of nearly 10 minutes in the opening half.
On the year, Jakubowski is averaging 11.4 ppg and 3.9 rpg. He leads the Falcons in field-goal pct. (50.0%; 34-of-68) and assists (4.5 apg) and is tied for the steals lead (1.8 spg).
In the classroom, Jakubowski maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.56, entering the fall semester.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performed well during the previous week's competition(s). The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Louis Orr head to Central Arkansas for a Saturday (Dec. 20) game, before returning home to take on Towson on Monday night (Dec. 22). The Towson game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
