Falcons Drop Two to End Stay in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee - The Falcons fell to Iowa State, 6-0 and St. Francis (Pa), 4-3 on Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon to finish the Chattanooga Classic. The Falcons had another rough defensive outing on the dirt in the last day of the tournament.
At the plate the Falcons were led by seniors Dawnjene DeLong and Allison Vallas. DeLong went three-for-six with a .500 batting average and a .667 slugging percentage on the day smashing a double to left field and two singles one to right field and one up the middle. Vallas went three-for-seven on the day hitting a .429 batting average and slugging percentage with three singles.
Against Iowa State University
The Falcons started day three off against the Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones and pitcher Rachel Zabriskie were able to keep the Falcon bats under wrap only allowing the Orange and Brown three hits in the game. DeLong hit two singles in her first two at-bats, including a game opener single to right field to get the Falcons started, while Vallas added a lead-off single in the seventh inning.
Junior Hayley Wiemer started her second game of the season retiring seven Cyclones in four and one-third innings on the mound. She kept the Cyclones scoreless for the first three innings, striking out the side in the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the fourth ISU's started their first rally scoring two runs off of two hits with two Falcon errors extending the inning. Once again in the bottom of the fifth the Cyclones put together a string of hits with three singles and two doubles, scoring three runs taking a 5-0 lead over the Falcons. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth a Falcon error extended the inning followed by two ISU singles scoring one more run for the Cyclones.
Against St. Francis (Pa)
The Orange and Brown finished off the Chattanooga Classic against St. Francis (Pa.) losing to the RedFlash, 3-4.
Melissa Bott made her second start of the season for the Falcons keeping the RedFlash scoreless only allowing one hit in the first three innings.
The Falcons started off the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Weimer and Vallas. With no outs and runners on first and second base the Falcons weren't able to come up with another hit to drive
The RedFlash scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning off of three straight hits, taking a 1-0 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons were able to keep the RedFlash to one run as DeLong threw out the next two batters at first with Bott getting the third put out of the inning.
BG was kept scoreless in the fifth despite a lead-off single to right field by Haleigh Bielstein and a single to center field by Zada Lines.
The RedFlash scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of a three-run homer by St. Francis' Nicole Bender, extending their lead to 4-0 over BG.
Both teams were scoreless in the sixth inning. With the Falcons down 4-0 in the top of the seventh with out, DeLong sparked a Falcon rally with a double to left field. After walking Lines and Wiemer, loading the bases a single by Vallas to center field scored DeLong and Lines putting the Falcons on the board, 2-4. With two outs Susan Sontag came up with a double to left field scoring Vallas and bringing the Falcons within one, 3-4. The Falcons weren't able to tie the game up and lost, 4-3 to the RedFlash.
The Falcons (0-5) will return to the field as they pack their bags and head south to Auburn, Alabama for the War Eagle Classic (Mar. 7-9).
