The BGSU softball team dropped two games today (Mar. 7) at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama. The Falcons started off their second straight tournament in the south against Lispcomb. The Orange and Brown fell to the Lady Bison in another one run loss, 6-5. BG then matched-up against SEC host Auburn for the first time in program history. The Tigers edged the Falcons 3-1, giving BG their second loss of the War Eagle Classic.
The Falcons opened the War Eagle Classic against a familiar opponent the Lipscomb Lady Bison, in their second meeting of the season. The Falcons once again fell to the Lady Bison by a mere run, despite two two-out rallies.
Although the Falcons weren't in Bowling Green, for the first time this season they were the home team on the field. The Falcons kept the Lady Bison scoreless for the first three innings, while the Orange and Brown were able to put one run on the board in the bottom of the second in the first of two two-out rallies. With two-outs in the bottom of the second freshman Katelynn Boso smashed a double off the towering center field wall followed up by a single to left field by fellow freshman Haleigh Bielstein recording her first collegiate RBI.
A rough fourth inning for the Falcons on the field led to the Lady Bison tallying three runs ended by one of the diving catches from freshman Lindsay Arney in right field.
The Falcons bounced back in the bottom of the fourth with their second two-out rally leading to four more runs for the Orange and Brown. The two-rally started with a base-on-balls for Bielstein, bringing up the top of the line-up. Dawnjene DeLong blasted a single to the left side of the field, putting two runners on for the Falcons. Zada Lines followed up with rocket to left field scoring Bielstein. The Lady Bison gave Hayley Wiemer a free ticket to first base, loading the bases for clean-up hitter Allison Vallas. Vallas cranked a line drive off the right center wall scoring three more runs for the Falcons, taking a 5-3 lead over Lipscomb.
Both teams were kept scoreless in the fifth inning but a Lady Bison two-out rally in the top of the sixth put BG behind once again 6-5. The Falcons weren't able to score in the bottom of the sixth or seventh, falling to the Lady Bison, 6-5 in game one of the War Eagle Classic.
The Falcon bats were alive once again against the Lady Bison as the Falcons out hit Lipscomb 9-8 and .321 batting average compared to a .235. The Falcons had five players hit a .330 batting average or better. Allison Vallas led the way for the Falcon sticks going three-for-three against Lipscomb with a triple and three RBIs, good for a perfect 1.000 batting average and a 1.667 slugging percentage. Boso hit a career high .667 batting average, going two-for-three with a single and a double. Wiemer and Bielstein both hit a .500 going one-for-two.
The second game of the day pitted the Falcons against SEC host the Auburn Tigers, for the first time in program history. The Falcons were kept scoreless in the first and second inning, although the Orange and Brown had a runner on second with no outs in the top of the second after a Vallas double to center field. However, the Tigers were able to score a run in the first and second inning.
The Falcons came back in the top of the third scoring one run to cut the Tigers lead, 2-1. The Orange and Brown started off the inning with a lead off base-on-balls for Emily Gouge. Carly Riepenhoff came in to pinch run for Gouge and stole second base. DeLong singled to left field moving Rienpenhoff to third. With runners on first and third, DeLong stole second and a throwing error by the Tiger's second basemen sent the ball out of play giving a base to both runners scoring Riepenhoff and moving DeLong to third.
The Falcons were kept scoreless by the Tigers the rest of the game, allowing the Falcons only one more hit. The Tigers scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth off of a one run homer, defeating the Falcons, 3-1.
The Falcon offensive charge was led by DeLong going two-for-three against the Tigers hitting a .667 with two singles. Vallas went one-for-three hitting a .333 with a double.
Due to weather conditions the Falcons will now return to the diamond Saturday (Mar. 8) afternoon to take on southern foe, Tennessee Tech at 2:30 p.m. and will finish up the War Eagle Classic against southern competitor Georgia Southern on Sunday (Mar. 9) at 11:00 a.m.
